American Business Community Support for Entrepreneurs in Bali

Balidiscovery.com met Peter Meyer, a Governor of AmCham Indonesia the American Chamber of Commerce - for a quick interview regarding the Regional Entrepreneurship Summit (RES) held in Nusa Dua in July 2011.

The Regional Entrepreneurship Summit included among its star speakers appearances by U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and the Executive Chairman of Google, Eric Schmidt. The gathering was intended to bring together Indonesian and American entrepreneurs, investors and government officials.

The Interview: Peter Meyer, Governor, AMCHAM Indonesia

Balidiscovery.com: What was your impression of the Regional Entrepreneurship Summit?

Peter Meyer: “I was excited to see the number of Indonesian delegates young entrepreneurs from not just Bali but Jakarta, Medan, and other parts of Indonesia -- get a chance to interact with a very high-powered group of investors and government officials put together by Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia GEPI.”

Balidiscovery.com: What did AmCham do during the RES?

Peter Meyer: “Well, besides sponsoring the lunch before Secretary Clinton spoke, AmCham, which had five of its leaders at the Summit, distributed its Entrepreneur’s Primer.’ This pamphlet, funded by AmCham as a public service, was written by AmCham member companies, such as Chartis, CitiGroup, Ernst & Young, Google, Prisma Public Relations, and the law firm of Soewito Suhardiman Eddymurthy Kardono (Ssek)“

“We see the pamphlet as a simple tool that offers young, aspiring individuals with an idea, but without business experience, a deliberately basic introduction to the kind of business-related challenges they will have to deal with, and need to be aware of, if they want their dreams of success to turn into sustainable reality.”

“So what we have done is to provide an introduction to professional services needed to start and grow a business. And, to help make it more accessible, the pamphlet is presented in both English and Bahasa Indonesia.”

Balidiscovery.com: How is AmCham’s approach unique?

Peter Meyer: “AmCham is a business organization. Most of our members run businesses and for-profit and non-profit organizations. In many cases, our members started those businesses themselves here in Indonesia. That makes us uniquely competent at guiding and supporting others who wish to start businesses here in Indonesia."

“The focus of our efforts is to look at grass roots activities, to enhance the mindset of people here in Indonesia, where entrepreneurship has not always had the opportunity to play the role that is needed to strengthen society through job creation in an environment where job seekers always outnumber job creators.”

“For that matter, AmCham is encouraging its members to support the MEKAR activities of the Putera Sampoerna Foundation, and is partnering with Prestasi Junior Indonesia, which is the Junior Achievement organization, in its annual Student Company Competition, which introduces more than 20,000 vocational students to entrepreneurial and small business thinking.”

“AmCham has also committed resources to help the Greater San Jose Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GSJHCC) develop trade opportunities in Indonesia.”

Balidiscovery.com: What is AmCham hoping to accomplish through your support of entrepreneurship?

Peter Meyer: “At the end of the day, what AmCham Indonesia wants to see is an Indonesia where first, social equality is bridging the gap between rich and poor; second, as a consequence of a strong and healthy society, democratic values are here to stay; and, three, because of the availability of disposable income, US products and services will be in demand. Our support for entrepreneurship in Indonesia is intended to contribute to all three of those goals.
