A judge in Atlanta, Georgia, was shot dead on Friday morning in his courtroom after a gun was wrestled by the attacker from a sheriff's deputy, Cable News Network reported. A court reporter was also killed, the report said. Just last week, the mother and husband of a Chicago judge, Joan Lefkow, were murdered by a man who hid in the closet of her home in the hope of shooting her, according to a suicide note left by the suspect. -- DPA

Thaksin retains his finance minister

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra officially appointed his new Cabinet on Friday, retaining his finance minister but bringing in a trade expert to take over the foreign ministry. As expected, Somkid Jatusripitak held onto the finance portfolio, a job he was appointed to when Thaksin first took office in 2001. Somkid will also hold the post of deputy prime minister in charge of finance. Taking over as foreign minister is Kantathee Supamongkol, who has been serving as one of the government's international trade negotiators. He replaces Surakiart Sathirathai, who moves to the position of deputy prime minister. Thailand has been promoting Surakiart to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Thaksin said the move would give him more time to campaign for the UN post. -- AP
