Research In Motion To Set Up Facility In Indonesia

JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) is arranging for a repair facility in Indonesia to expand its after-sales service and will continue investing in the country, the company said in a statement Tuesday. The company, commonly known as RIM, said in a statement that it "is in the process of arranging for a RIM-authorized repair facility to be opened in Indonesia in the near term.

Indonesia mining sector faces election risks

JAKARTA, July 7 (Reuters) - Indonesia has struggled to lure foreign investment to its mining sector in recent years, and the nationalist line on resource exploitation taken by politicians ahead of Wednesday's presidential election has hardly helped. The mining industry is also awaiting details of regulations in a new mining law passed last year which was aimed at squeezing more from the country's rich mineral resources.

Tourism industry grows 1.69%

The tourism industry grew around 1.69% from January to May, with foreign tourist arrivals reaching 2.4 million, up 40,098 from the same period last year, giving optimism that the target for the Visit Indonesia Year 2009 of 6.5 million foreign tourist arrivals would be achieved, Antara reported. "The global economic crisis has not affected our tourism very much, particularly tourist arrivals," Director General of Marketing at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Sapta Nirwandar said on Friday.

Polish businesses eye Indonesia as business base

A number of Polish businesses are considering making Indonesia a base for their business activities, a Polish diplomat said, Asia Pulse reported. Damian Irzyk, economic affairs chief at the Polish Embassy in Jakarta, said on Thursday Indonesia was now seen as being on equal footing with other Asian countries such as Japan, China and India and as having great potential. He said there were many sectors that could be developed in Indonesia such as markets for Polish products and energy.

$153M likely for electronics, IT industries: Ministry

Five foreign producers of electronic and information technology products plan to invest around $153 million in Indonesia this year, the Industry Ministry said, Asia Pulse reported. South Korea's Yu Won and Samsung through its local unit PT Samsung Electronic Indonesia, plan to build cellular phone and video recorder factories with a total investment of $110 million.

Investment cluster proposed for C., E. Java

East and Central Java administrations have announced plans to develop their northern and southern border areas to improve domestic and foreign investment, an official said Thursday, The Jakarta Post reported. East Java Investment Board chief Hary Soegiri said the investment clusters were expected to contribute around 20% of the provinces' investment realization this year.

Investment reaches US$7.3b in first semester

Total investment of US$7.3 billion (inward and domestic) in the first semester indicated brighter prospects, although lower than figures for last year, the Investment Coordination Board (BKPM) says. BKPM chairman Muhammad Lutfi said Monday that the figure for inward investment was 27 percent up from that of the second semester last year, but still 35 percent down compared to the same period in 2008.

Car sales in Indonesia down 28% in first half of 2009

Jakarta (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Car sales in Indonesia plunged 28 per cent to 209,679 units in the first half of 2009 from 292,670 units in the same period last year on price hikes. All car makers in Indonesia raised their prices early this year, forcing consumers to delay plans to buy new cars, Joko Trisanyoto, the marketing director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), said.

Public Companies not to be in Negative Investors List

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) recently announced that public companies will not be included in the government’s list of ‘negative’ investors. This was announced by BKPM chairman, M. Lutfi on Monday after a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in Jakarta. Lutfi said that as long as the public companies were listed in the Jakarta Stock Exchange, they would be regarded as locally-based companies.
