Zoo relocation plan opposed<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: Residents of the Central Java capital of Semarang
\nstrongly oppose the mayor's plan to relocate the Tinjomoyo Zoo to
\nMijen.<\/p>\n
Psychology and Environmental Study Foundation chairman
\nWijanarko said here on Thursday that relocation of the zoo was
\nunnecessary.<\/p>\n
\"Unstable land and low visitor numbers could not be the reason
\nfor relocating the zoo,\" Wijanarko said.<\/p>\n
Not all of the zoo area sits on unstable land according to
\nWijanarko, while he says that existing land problems could be
\nsolved with architectural technology.<\/p>\n
\"Many buildings are still standing there,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Tinjomoyo, where the zoo complex is now standing, is
\nenvironmentally more sound than Mijen, which is located between
\nLemah Mendah and Tambangan, areas rich in teakwood, he said.<\/p>\n
\"If the zoo complex is moved to Mijen, deforestation will take
\nplace in Lemah Mendah and Tambangan. This will lead to a natural
\ndisaster as the teakwood forest is a water catchment area for
\nSemarang and its surrounding areas,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Another protest came from Pteropus Vamiyus Indonesia
\nFoundation chairman Thomas Fery, who said that the mayoralty
\ncould not arbitrarily move the zoo to Mijen.<\/p>\n
\"Thorough studies must be conducted before deciding to move
