The Jakarta provincial government has temporarily closed zone 4A at the Bantargebang waste disposal site in Bekasi following a waste collapse on 8 March 2026 that killed four people, including two drivers, a waste picker, and a female vendor. Governor Pramono Anung announced the closure as a mitigation measure and revealed plans to establish two new waste collection points whilst diverting operations to zone 3, as Jakarta currently sends 7,400 to 8,000 tonnes of waste daily to Bantargebang. The provincial government is also promoting source-level waste segregation to reduce the volume of waste sent to the final disposal site, acknowledging that Bantargebang's capacity is severely limited.

JAKARTA — The Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared two new
waste collection points following the temporary closure of zone 4A at
the Bantargebang Waste Disposal Site (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java,
after a waste collapse on Sunday, 8 March 2026.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the closure of zone 4A was
implemented to ensure the landslide remediation process could proceed
safely.

“As a mitigation measure, operations in zone 4A have been temporarily
closed. Waste deliveries to Bantargebang TPST are being minimised, with
operations being redirected to zone 3, whilst two new collection points
are being prepared as cleanup efforts continue,” Pramono said at Jakarta
City Hall on Monday, 9 March 2026.

This is necessary because Jakarta daily sends approximately 7,400 to
8,000 tonnes of waste to Bantargebang. Therefore, the government must
make operational adjustments to maintain waste management services.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is also promoting waste segregation
at the source to prevent all waste from being sent to the final disposal
site.

“Our daily waste volume is between 7,400 and 8,000 tonnes, with 8,000
being typical on weekends. There will certainly be impacts, and to
address this we will implement a segregation process at the endpoint,”
Pramono said.

Pramono acknowledged that the capacity of Bantargebang TPST is
increasingly limited, necessitating better waste management
protocols.

“We also need to ensure that not everything is sent to Bantargebang,
as capacity restrictions must be implemented because its absorption
capacity is severely limited,” Pramono stated.

Pramono attributed the waste pile collapse in zone 4A to extreme
rainfall that had pounded the area for an extended duration. The
incident, which occurred around 14:30 local time, resulted in four
deaths.

The victims included two drivers, a female waste picker, and a woman
approximately 60 years old who was reported to have been selling goods
near the location.
",
