Zawawi to appear in court soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Prosecutor's Office is expected to
\nsubmit to the North Jakarta District Court this week dossiers
\ndetailing the alleged involvement in corrupt practices of former
\nhead of the Jakarta Logistics Agency (Dolog Jaya) Ahmad Zawawi.<\/p>\n
\"We have completed the dossiers,\" assistant for intelligence
\nat the prosecutor's office, Andi Syarifuddin, announced after
\nattending the inauguration ceremony of Jakarta's Provincial
\nElections Committee on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Separately on Monday, Andi, in his capacity as acting head of
\nthe prosecutor's North Jakarta office, said that Zawawi -- in
\npreparation for his trial -- was taken into custody at Cipinang
\nPenitentiary immediately after he made his routine report on his
\nwhereabouts to penitentiary officials on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"His immediate detention is important as he otherwise might
\nescape with his city arrest status,\" Andi told The Jakarta Post,
\nadding that the dossiers would be probably submitted to the court
\nby Friday at the latest.<\/p>\n
He, however, refused to disclose why his office had spent so
\nmuch time in preparing a case against Zawawi, who last year was
\naccused of taking part in the illegal issue of rice delivery
\norders and the unlawful export of 1,900 metric tons of rice to
\nSarawak in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The case made many angry as it was thought that the
\nskyrocketing prices of rice in the capital at that time was
\nmainly due to Zawawi's misdeeds.<\/p>\n
Zawawi, a 57-year-old Army colonel, was named a main suspect
\nin the case and was taken into police custody on Sept. 24. He was
\nlater released on bail at the request of his relatives.<\/p>\n
Late October last year, the city prosecutor's office returned
\nthe dossiers to the city police due to a lack of eligible
\nevidence, and asked the police to resubmit the case with clear
\ncharges.<\/p>\n
During police questioning, Zawawi reportedly confessed to
\nstealing more than half of Jakarta's daily rice supply and
\nselling it to business partners.<\/p>\n
The city's estimated daily rice requirement is approximately
\n5,000 metric tons, but the agency consistently distributes less
\nthan half the amount.<\/p>\n
Zawawi was relieved from his post, after serving for five
\nmonths, by Governor Sutiyoso who made the decision after
\nconsulting Minister of Industry and Trade\/State Logistics Agency
\nchairman Rahardi Ramelan to help speed up the police
\ninvestigation. (ind)<\/p>",
