The proposal was voiced during the National\nSilaturahmi and Baznas Award 2026 event in Jakarta on Tuesday. \u201cOur\ncurrent regulation only allows zakat to reduce taxable income, so it is\na tax deduction, not a tax credit. We are striving for zakat to become a\ntax credit, so that what is paid as zakat simultaneously becomes part of\nour tax obligation,\u201d said DSN MUI Chairman Cholil Nafis. According to\nCholil, this policy change would provide a fairer incentive for Muslims\nwho bear the dual burden of fulfilling religious alms and state taxes.\nHe argued that recognising zakat as a direct credit against tax\nliabilities would encourage more individuals and businesses to channel\ntheir zakat through official institutions, thereby strengthening the\nnational sharia economy. Cholil further explained that the move would\nnot diminish state revenue but rather stimulate economic circulation.\n\u201cWhen we talk about economic growth through zakat, it does not mean the\nwealth disappears. The more zakat flows, the greater the purchasing\npower of the community, which in turn drives the economy,\u201d he said. He\nstressed that regardless of the tax treatment, the obligation to pay\nzakat remains a religious duty for Muslims.
