Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and\nCorrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra has urged all parties to maintain calm\nand peace in Aceh following the unrest during the 21st Aceh Peace Day\ncommemoration.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully the situation in Aceh is now conducive and all parties are\nmaintaining calm, order and peace,\u201d Yusril said on the grounds of\nMerdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on Monday (17\/8).<\/p>\n
He also said the government respects all elements of Acehnese society\nwho love the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
According to him, the government and the public need to work together\nto address various remaining issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe respect all elements of Acehnese society who equally love the\nUnitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. And of course, we will work\ntogether to overcome various shortcomings that exist within society,\nwhich are our shared task to improve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The unrest previously occurred in the grounds of Baiturrahman Grand\nMosque, Banda Aceh, during a dhikr and joint prayer to commemorate the\n21st Aceh Peace Day on Saturday (15\/8).<\/p>\n
The crowd raised the Star and Crescent flag on the mosque\u2019s main pole\neven though officers had asked that the flag not be flown.<\/p>\n
The situation then heated up until a throwing exchange occurred\nbetween the crowd and officers. Police dispersed the crowd using tear\ngas.<\/p>\n
The Aceh Regional Police stated that the situation had returned to\nbeing under control and conducive. Joint personnel remain on standby\naround the location and patrols will be increased in several areas of\nAceh.<\/p>\n
Amid the situation, the government is also discussing a number of\nissues related to Aceh. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas said\nPresident Prabowo Subianto ordered him to coordinate with the House of\nRepresentatives regarding the revision of the Aceh Special Autonomy Law,\nwhich will expire in 2027.<\/p>\n
Supratman said the government hopes the discussion of the law\nrevision can be completed this year.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Aceh Government and the Aceh House of Representatives\nhave agreed to consult with the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding legal\ncertainty on the use of the Star and Crescent flag.
