Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and\nCorrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra has asserted that promotional content\nfor alcoholic beverages linked to a Quran memorisation challenge can be\nprocessed legally. Yusril referred to the blasphemy provisions now\nregulated in the National Criminal Code (KUHP).<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope the police will carefully examine the intent of Articles 300\nand 301 of the new Criminal Code to find a solution in resolving this\nlegal issue so that it can be enforced fairly,\u201d Yusril said when\ncontacted in Jakarta on Thursday (13\/8).<\/p>\n
Yusril explained that although the promotional content cannot be\ndirectly categorised as blasphemy or incitement, the action was deemed\ninappropriate and offensive to the feelings of Muslims. This has the\npotential to trigger public anger if not handled properly.<\/p>\n
Following a report from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Yusril\nasked the police to interpret the norms in Articles 300 and 301 of the\nNational Criminal Code fairly. Given that the regulation does not cover\nall aspects of blasphemy in detail, careful application is required.<\/p>\n
Yusril suggested that the police involve experts to clarify the\nmatter. He stressed that the purpose of the investigation is not merely\nto punish, but to restore order within society.<\/p>\n
Yusril stated that a resolution through restorative justice is\npossible if the content creators acted unintentionally and are willing\nto apologise, in order to accommodate the complainant\u2019s\ndissatisfaction.<\/p>\n
He warned the police not to ignore the issue. \u201cIf it is left alone,\nanger will arise, then demonstrations will follow, and then disturbances\nto public order will occur, which we hope will not happen in August as\nwe celebrate Independence Day,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The controversy began with a viral video on social media platform X\nvia the account @Jakartatalk<\/span>. The video showed an\nalcoholic beverage brand at The Sound Project music festival holding a\nchallenge for visitors to recite Quranic verses in exchange for alcohol\nas a reward.<\/p>\n The event organisers have issued a formal apology and claimed that\nthe challenge occurred outside the direction or approval of management.\nThey asserted that they do not tolerate any form of blasphemy or actions\nthat offend SARA (ethnicity, religion, race and inter-group relations)\nwithin their event area.<\/p>",
