Yusril admits to intervention<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza
\nMahendra said on Wednesday that he had intervened to stop the
\nSupreme Court from promoting a district court chief in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Yusril told House of Representatives Commission II on legal
\nand home affairs that he vetoed the Supreme Court's plan to
\npromote Judge Lalu Mariyun, a former head of the South Jakarta
\nDistrict Court, to the Kendari District Court in Southeast
\nSulawesi.<\/p>\n
"I said no," Yusril said, adding that his intervention was
\n"nothing but a matter of appropriateness".<\/p>\n
Lalu was instead moved to Surabaya as a judge with the East
\nJava High Court.<\/p>\n
The judge is no stranger to controversy. He led a panel of
\njudges who decided former president Soeharto was not fit to stand
\ntrial on graft charges.<\/p>\n
In September 2000, Lalu acquitted Soeharto's youngest son,
\nHutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, and businessman Ricardo Gelael on
\ncorruption charges in the high-profile Bulog land deal. -- JP<\/p>",
