YouTube has reached an out-of-court settlement with a 15-year-old Florida teenager who sued the platform for allegedly designing addictive features. The case is part of a broader legal offensive against social media giants, with the teenager continuing to pursue claims against Meta, TikTok, and Snap Inc. The settlement follows a landmark US$6 million verdict earlier this year against YouTube and Meta in a similar addiction case.

Google’s video-sharing platform, YouTube, has officially resolved a
legal lawsuit regarding a social media addiction case filed by a
15-year-old teenager in Florida, United States. This settlement
represents a new legal blow to a series of online platforms frequently
accused of triggering mental health crises among children.

The teenager, identified by the initials R.K.C. in court documents,
alleged that YouTube and other social media companies deliberately
designed their platforms to make users addicted.

Responding to the settlement, Google spokesperson José Castañeda
issued an official statement regarding the company’s future commitment.
“This matter has been resolved amicably, and our focus remains on
building age-appropriate products and parental controls that deliver on
that promise,” Castañeda told the BBC.

Despite settling with YouTube, R.K.C. is reportedly proceeding with
legal action against the parent company of Instagram (Meta), TikTok, and
Snap Inc. The trial for these three tech giants is scheduled to begin on
27 July.

The lawsuit filed by R.K.C. is the second case to emerge publicly
following a similar case won by a 20-year-old woman from California,
K.G.M. Earlier this year, K.G.M. successfully won damages of US$6
million (approximately Rp98 billion) against YouTube and Meta. Before
K.G.M.’s trial commenced, Snap and TikTok had already opted for
settlements.

Legal counsel for R.K.C., John Morgan and Emily Jeffcott, shared
their views on how these technology companies operate. “As seen by the
jury in the first trial, leadership in these social media companies has
devised strategies over many years to ensnare children from an early age
and maximise their usage,” Morgan and Jeffcott stated in a joint
announcement.

They added that several popular features, such as autoplay and
infinite scroll, were intentionally designed “with the aim of increasing
profits at the expense of the mental health of our younger
generation.”

On the other hand, Google asserted to the BBC that they have built
YouTube responsibly for over a decade. The company stated they always
work alongside families to provide a safer and more beneficial online
experience for young users.
",
