Youths dispersed by security forces<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Security officers dispersed hundreds of
\nyouths staging a demonstration demanding independence for Irian
\nJaya at the provincial legislative building here yesterday
\nmorning.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators had been blockading the street in front of
\nthe legislative building since Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
Tension mounted when the local military chief, Lt. Col. J.P.
\nSilooy, and police chief, Lt. Col. M. Nizam, tried to convince
\nthe demonstrators to leave the area peacefully.<\/p>\n
When the group refused, anti-riot brigades armed with rifles
\nand shields were deployed to block roads giving access to the
\nsite of the demonstration.<\/p>\n
The youths briefly threw stones at the legislative building
\nand a nearby telecommunications office, shattering a number of
\nglass panes.<\/p>\n
But after further negotiations they calmed down and decided to
\nleave the area.<\/p>\n
However, the demonstrators refused to board trucks provided by
\nthe military, preferring instead to walk home to Abepura and
\nNorth Jayapura subdistricts under military escort, Antara
\nreported.<\/p>",
