Youths call for nightspot closure<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Around 150 students grouped in the Pemuda
\nPancasila youth organization have urged city councilors to
\nimmediately close all entertainment spots here that are allegedly
\nused for drug transactions and prostitution.<\/p>\n
The youths, who said they were members of the Pemuda
\nPancasila's Students and College Students Union, submitted their
\ndemands during a noisy but peaceful rally at the City Council
\noffice on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Some of the placards and banners carried by the protesters
\nread: \"Drugs, Narcotics, Ecstasy, Low-grade heroin are forbidden
\nand destroy the youths' morals\" and \"Destroy discotheques and
\nnightspots operating in Jakarta\".<\/p>\n
Another poster named some of the entertainment spots with
\nwhich they have a gripe.<\/p>\n
Ten representatives of the group were received by nine
\ncouncilors.<\/p>\n
The group's coordinator, Anhar Nasution, told the councilors
\nthat the major cause of the country's political difficulties was
\nmoral destruction.<\/p>\n
\"One of the factors that has destroyed morals (of many people)
\nis the present misuse of entertainment spots,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In response, councilor Saamin said the council would hold a
\ndialog on the case soon together with the city administration and
\nthe protesters.<\/p>\n
Hotels, discotheques, pubs, massage parlors and game arcades
\nhere are sometimes associated with prostitution, drugs and
\ngambling.<\/p>\n
The protesters said that operators were able to run their
\nbusinesses smoothly as a result of routinely bribing a great
\nnumber of officials and the executives of several institutions,
\nincluding a certain youth organization. (ind)<\/p>",
