Youthful consumerism<\/p>\n

Consumerism in major cities of Indonesia has reached a degree
\nof prime concern, even though it reflects, on the surface,
\neconomic growth. Higher incomes also inflate the general public's
\nbuying power.<\/p>\n
Consumers are lured into buying an assortment of products.
\nThey seem to be riding the high crest of consumer demands. If
\nconsumerism is left unchecked like this it will certainly come to
\nno good, particularly where teenagers are concerned. Buying
\nwhatever one likes does not make youngsters aware of the value of
\nmoney. Besides, in few cases, a free flow of pocket money makes
\nyoungsters prone to drug abuse. The thought that parents have to
\ntoil hard to rank among the affluent does not occur to many
\nyoungsters.<\/p>\n
That some youngsters seem apt to follow the path of
\nconsumerism instead of becoming productive is incomprehensible.
\nIf nothing serious is done about the high level of consumerism in
\nthis country it will negatively effect our youngsters.<\/p>\n
Of serious concern is the fact that the impact of consumerism
\ncould render many people incapable of making a decent living and
\nmake them unfit to compete under stressful conditions.<\/p>\n
Through this letter I appeal to the government that serious
\nattention be given to the affairs and education of youngsters, in
\nparticular those who live in big cities.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, I cannot deny that I am also aware of
\nanother type of teenager: Those who show concern for the future
\nand those who keep within the norms of our culture.<\/p>\n
This letter is only an appeal for a better quality of life in
\nsome public quarters.<\/p>\n
