Youth groups support fight against 'preman'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Three powerful youth organizations said on
\nSaturday they supported the determination of the city police and
\nmilitary to fight the street hoodlums throughout the capital.<\/p>\n
The three organizations are Pemuda Panca Marga, Forum
\nKomunikasi Putra Purnawirawan Indonesia and Pemuda Pancasila.<\/p>\n
Harianto Badjuri and Jonggi Sihombing, respectively the
\nchairmen of the Jakarta chapters of the Panca Marga youth group
\nand of the communication forum, which groups the children of
\nretired Armed Forces officers, told reporters the activities of
\nthe hoodlums, popularly called preman, tend to disrupt security.<\/p>\n
\"We strongly hail the operation to rid the city of
\nhooliganism,\" Harianto reiterated, adding that the Jakarta
\nchapter of Pemuda Pancasila backed his statement.<\/p>\n
The youth leaders urged the authorities, especially the police
\nand military officers, to undertake the fight against the
\nhoodlums carefully in order to avoid mistaken arrests.<\/p>\n
\"Carelessness in this fight will only lead to the arrests of
\ninnocent people,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The city police and military officers vowed early last week to
\nfight street hoodlums throughout Jakarta following the killing of
\none police officer and the wounding of another.<\/p>\n
First Lieutenant Budi Prasetyo Utomo was stabbed and beaten to
\ndeath by a group of drunken thugs near the Melawai Plaza building
\nin the Blok M shopping area in South Jakarta on Monday afternoon,
\nwhile Budi's colleague, Capt. Arman Depari, suffered several
\nbruises to the face.<\/p>\n
City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo and head of the
\nJakarta branch of the Coordinating Agency for National Defense
\nand Stability Maj. Gen. Wiranto announced that preman are now the
\nmain target in the joint crime-fighting drive code named
\nOperation Cleansing.<\/p>\n
The representatives of the youth organizations advised
\nJakartans to participate in the drive against the hoodlums
\nbecause creating security in the city is not only the job of
\npolice and military officers.<\/p>\n
\"Their participation can be in the form of intensifying moral
\neducation among our youth and maintaining security in their own
\ncommunities,\" Harianto said.<\/p>\n
Other supportive activities include steps toward eliminating
\nsocial problems ranging from student delinquency to unemployment,
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Jonggi urged young people, especially the children of police
\nand military officers, to join his organization to enable them to
\nwork toward solving the problems.<\/p>\n
He said that his organization has a training program for
\nunemployed youth and delinquent students.<\/p>\n
He explained that most of the young people who have joined his
\norganization's training programs are able to get appropriate
\njobs. Only a small number of them fail and become criminals
