Youth attack shop-house site<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A nearly completed shop-house building was
\nattacked by a group of youths on Jl. R.E. Martadinata in North
\nJakarta on Wednesday following a land dispute but no arrests were
\nmade following the incident.<\/p>\n
North Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Andi Chaeruddin said that
\nwhen police arrived at the scene the rioters had already fled.<\/p>\n
\"But we are still studying the case right now. What were the
\npossible motives and who were the people behind the attack?\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Andi confirmed that, on Wednesday, hundreds of men came to the
\nconstruction site of a shop-house, which was maintained by PT
\nSarana Jaya Ancol.<\/p>\n
\"We have little information on this matter but we are
\nprocessing this case while waiting for complaints made by PT
\nPembangunan Jaya Ancol over the damage,\" Andi told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the youths admitted that they came from areas
\nsuch as Cilincing, Kalibaru (both in North Jakarta) and as far
\naway as Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta and were organized by
\nHercules.<\/p>\n
Hercules, formerly known as the leader of a gang of hoodlums
\noperating in the busy Tanah Abang area, was seen accompanying a
\nman, identified only as Tommy.<\/p>\n
The youths did not immediately attack the building when they
\narrived at the site at around 11 a.m. They just stood in front of
\nthe half-completed building while their leaders talked to an
\nofficial from PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol.<\/p>\n
They then started to shout, demanding lunch until one of them
\npelted stones at the windows of the building. Mayhem then
\nerupted.<\/p>\n
They were not only attacking the building but also
\nintimidating construction workers who fled the scene in fear.<\/p>\n
\"They (the youths) also pulled out cables from inside the
\nbuilding, using stones to cut them. They took the cut cables with
\nthem,\" a witness said.<\/p>\n
A man in an army uniform was reportedly passing the location
\nand fired at least three warning shots to stop the commotion but
\nthe shots were ignored by the group.<\/p>\n
The youths became peaceful when lunch packages were sent to
\nthe location. They dispersed peacefully after lunch. (leo\/emf)<\/p>",
