Young RI researchers receive WIPO awards<\/p>\n

Young researchers from Indonesia on Tuesday received four awards
\nfrom the World International Property Organization (WIPO) after
\nwinning the 2004 Business Innovation Competition for Youth held
\nin October last year by the Ministry of National Education.<\/p>\n
The awards and certificates were presented by Ministry of
\nYouth and Sports director of youth affairs Sudradjat Rasyid at
\nGadjah Mada University.<\/p>\n
\"It's not easy to get (property rights) recognition from WIPO,
\nas the products have to be academically justified and socially
\nadvantageous,\" Sudradjat said as he congratulated the award
\nrecipients.<\/p>\n
WIPO is an international organization dedicated to helping
\nensure the rights of creators and owners of intellectual property
\nare protected worldwide. It also ensures inventors and authors
\nare recognized and rewarded for their ingenuity. WIPO presently
\nhas some 180 member-states or more than 90 percent of the world's
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
First place went to Agnes Widya Putri, a student of the state-
\nrun senior high school SMUN 6 Yogyakarta, for her innovative
\nproduct -- crackers made out of tofu byproducts.<\/p>\n
Second place went to a group of four student researchers from
\nGadjah Mada for their superior-quality tofu products made using a
\nnatural clotting agent.<\/p>\n
The third prize was given to a group of two student
\nresearchers from Semarang State University for a candy product,
\nlocally known as manisan, made out of papaya tree bark.<\/p>\n
The fourth award went to Niken Suryanti, a student of the
\nSurabaya's Airlangga University, for her waterproof sunscreen
\nproduct made out of kencur (greater galingale).<\/p>\n
Total prices worth US$600 were given to the four winners, the
\nfirst place-getter -- Agnes -- also received a medal from WIPO.<\/p>\n
\"This is the fourth time young Indonesian researchers have
\nreceived such awards from WIPO,\" Sudradjat said.<\/p>\n
It was important the researchers made connections with
\nindustry so their innovations could be turned into commercial
\nproducts, he said.<\/p>\n
Projects in Situ Udik village in Bogor and East Lombok were
\nexamples where raw materials were successfully processed into
\nadded-value agricultural commodities, Sudradjat said.<\/p>",
