Young puppeters contest organized<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture is
\norganizing a Young Puppet Masters contest to cultivate interest
\nand talent among the young generation in traditional cultures and
\nto promote Indonesian cultures aboard.<\/p>\n
The contest, held in cooperation with Savindo Entertainment,
\nopened on Friday night at the Sapta Pesona Auditorium in the
\nministry building, and will be held until Dec. 4.<\/p>\n
In the opening ceremony, 16-year-old puppet master Pamungkas
\nSakti Sedono performed an act from famous epic Mahabarata called
\nWahyu Makuta Rama, which is about the eight principles of
\nleadership.<\/p>\n
The performance was in English.<\/p>\n
Pamungkas is one of 10 participants in the competition, which
\nis limited to puppet masters of 17 years and under. More
\ncontestants are expected to register.<\/p>\n
The puppet masters may use Javanese, Indonesian or English to
\npresent shadow puppet acts. Judging will be based on narration,
\ntheme and storyline.<\/p>\n
To judge contest participants, the jury, consisting of
\nJavanese cultural observers and academics, will travel to the
\nlocations where each contestant performs his presentation.<\/p>\n
The winners will be awarded trophies and cash prizes from the
\nMinister of Tourism, Art and Culture Marzuki Darusman. Following
\nthe competition, the puppet masters will be trained in their
\nusage of English to participate in cultural events abroad.<\/p>\n
"We have already received a letter of interest from an event
\norganizer in Pakistan, stating their interest to promote young
\npuppet masters there," said Sawitri, the event's chairwoman. (46)<\/p>",
