Yotefa Strait affected<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The development of a commercial center
\nin the Entrop district has adversely affected the waters of the
\nYotefa Strait.<\/p>\n
In addition to the pollution, mangrove trees and 12 hectares
\nof sago plantations belonging to the local people have been cut
\ndown to make way for the development. The neighboring forests,
\nintended for tourism, have been illegally felled.<\/p>\n
Tobati village head Gaspers Itaar told Antara yesterday that
\nthe polluted waters have created skin infections among the local
\npeople.<\/p>\n
Gaspers said Irian Jaya's provincial administration built the
\ncommercial center with an investment of Rp 5 billion (US$2.08
\nmillion) to relocate family businesses from the Ampera area of
\nJayapura.<\/p>\n
However, waste and sediment from the commercial center have
\nreduced the depth of the Yotefa Strait, making it difficult for
\nlocal people from the villages of Tobati, Enjros and Nafri,to
\ncatch the seafood they need, he said.<\/p>\n
The fish, shrimps, crabs and sea snails of the strait are the
\nboth the livelihood and diet of the local people.<\/p>\n
Jayapura mayor Raden Roemantyo was unavailable for comment.
