Yor's arrest was not politically motivated: Hendro<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chief of the Jakarta branch of the Agency for
\nthe Coordination of Support for National Stability (Bakorstanasda
\nJaya), Maj. Gen. Hendropriyono, yesterday denied that the arrest
\nof Yor, the head of a leading national youth organization, was
\npolitically motivated.<\/p>\n
\"It's not true that Yor's arrest was politically motivated. He
\nwas arrested for gambling and gambling only,\" the two-star
\ngeneral who is popularly known as Hendro insisted.<\/p>\n
Hendro's comment came in reaction to a statement made by the
\nchairman of the central executive board of the Pemuda Pancasila
\nyouth organization, Yapto Suryosumarno, that Yor's arrest was
\ninherent with political bias.<\/p>\n
Yor was arrested along with six other persons less than two
\nweeks ago at a gambling den on Jl. Daan Mogot, West Jakarta. The
\nsuspects were caught red-handed playing rummy and macok at a
\nhouse which also functioned as an office and a warehouse for
\nplywood.<\/p>\n
During the raid, police also confiscated Rp 1,572,000 (US$725)
\nin cash, gambling paraphernalia and pornographic discs.<\/p>\n
Initially the arrest did not receive much attention from the
\npress because many journalists feared that their personal safety
\nwould be threatened for publicizing the detention of the head of
\nthe notoriously raucous youth organization.<\/p>\n
The fear was so great among journalists that Lt. Col. Gories
\nMere, chief of general crimes at city police headquarters,
\noffered the services of the mobile brigade forces to protect
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the arrest, Jakarta's Deputy Chief of Police,
\nBrig. Gen. Ismet Ibrahim yesterday explained that Yor's arrest
\nwas conducted in accordance to the proper procedures.<\/p>\n
\"He will undergo due process -- let's wait and see how it
\nturns out,\" he said, while accompanying Hendro in a surprise
\ninspection of incoming Indonesian housemaids at the Soekarno-
\nHatta airport yesterday.<\/p>\n
Debt collector<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Moh. Assegaff, a prominent lawyer, said yesterday
\nthat the existence of debt-collectors was not entirely illegal.<\/p>\n
\"Many of them are quite successful in collecting owed money
\nfrom debtors who are using the bureaucracy of the courts in order
\nto stall payment of their debts,\" he said, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
Assegaff's was commenting on a remark made by Hendro that he
\nwould try to wipe-out the existence of debt-collectors.<\/p>\n
Hendro believed that the methods of intimidation and physical
\ncoercion used by debt collectors were distressing to the
\ncommunity.<\/p>\n
However Assegaff points out that not all debt-collectors
\nresorted to such gruesome tactics.<\/p>\n
\"I was once visited by a very tough looking, muscular debt
\ncollector who had business with one of my clients. I explained my
\nclients position and we talked in a very civilized manner,\" he
