        "content": "<p>Yorrys' absence delays gambling trial<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Seven people, including an executive of a<br>\nshadowy, powerful youth organization, were arraigned at the West<br>\nJakarta District Court yesterday in connection with gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Yorrys Raweyai, the day-to-day chairman of Pemuda Pancasila,<br>\nwas supposed to have been tried along with six other defendants<br>\non charges of organizing and playing rummy and macok at a<br>\nstorehouse in West Jakarta in July, but didn't show up in court<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants were tried in two separate trials.<\/p>\n<p>Yorrys, who was tried along with Sundoro Tan, Budianto and<br>\nHadi Mustapa -- all gamblers -- was tried in a separate trial,<br>\nwhile three other persons accused of organizing the gambling were<br>\ntried in another trial.<\/p>\n<p>\"He probably has not received the subpoena,\" said Ruhut<br>\nSitompul, the lawyer of Yorrys.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge Ismail Sebayang adjourned the trial of Yorrys<br>\nand three other defendants until Monday, asking prosecutor Noor<br>\nSaid to produce Yorrys in the next trial. Yorrys had been<br>\nreleased on bail shortly after his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Yorrys was arrested along with six other defendants on July<br>\n20, at a gambling den at Jl. Daan Mogot 125, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>During the raid, police also confiscated Rp 1,572,000<br>\n(US$724.4) in cash, cards and other gambling paraphernalia.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest of Yorrys, which stirred controversy, prompted<br>\nYapto Suryosumarno, the number-one person of Pemuda Pancasila, to<br>\nallege that it was politically motivated, a charge denied by<br>\nJakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Hendropriyono.<\/p>\n<p>Pemuda Pancasila is affiliated to the ruling Golkar group.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate trial, prosecutor Noor Said accused defendant<br>\nAbidin, 52, Bok Tjik Lim alias Halim Harto, 45, and Ng A Tjan<br>\nalias Herman Chandra, 64, of organizing the gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Said said that under the law gambling is illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The court adjourned the trial until next Monday to allow the<br>\ndefendants' lawyers, who comprise of Tommy Sihotang, Ratih Puspa<br>\nNusanti as well as Sitompul, to prepare a preliminary defense<br>\nstatement.<\/p>\n<p>Under the law a gambling organizer can be punished to a<br>\nmaximum of four years imprisonment or fined Rp 10 million, while<br>\na gambler, if convicted, can be sentenced to a maximum of 10<br>\nyears jail or a Rp 25 million fine.<\/p>\n<p>All of the six defendants are Indonesian citizens of Chinese-<br>\ndescent.<\/p>\n<p>Yorrys himself is an Indonesian of mixed Chinese-Irian origin,<br>\nan ethnic group in Indonesia's eastern most province of Irian<br>\nJaya which is popularly known as Serui Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>Yorrys is known as an influential figure in Pemuda Pancasila,<br>\na shadowy youth organization whose tentacles reportedly reach<br>\ninto labor, prostitution, loan sharking, transportation and<br>\nprotection rackets.(09)<\/p>",
