Yorris still the subject of police investigation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police still lack the hard evidence or
\ntestimonies needed to detain Yorris Raweyai, a Golkar
\nrepresentative in the People's Consultative Assembly who was
\napprehended last week for alleged gambling, an officer said.<\/p>\n
But, police will start collecting more information from
\nwitnesses, especially officers taking part in last Thursday's
\nraid, and reviewing available evidence found at the scene, city
\npolice chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata said yesterday.<\/p>\n
"We're still trying to find any hard evidence that can be used
\nto support the allegation (against Yorris)," Hamami said
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Yorris, who is also an executive of the Golkar-affiliated
\nPemuda Pancasila youth organization, was among almost 100 alleged
\ngamblers apprehended during Jakarta Military Command raids at
\nthree entertainment spots in West and North Jakarta on Thursday
\nlast week.<\/p>\n
A few days later, Yorris denied the allegations after being
\nsummoned by Golkar deputy chairman Abdul Gafur, who is also the
\nAssembly Deputy Speaker.<\/p>\n
Yorris admitted his presence at the entertainment center but
\ndenied he was gambling. He was quoted by Gafur as saying he was
\nthere for the Chinese New Year festivities.<\/p>\n
In 1994, Yorris was caught during a raid on an illicit
\ngambling den on Jl. Daan Mogot in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Hamami said without hard evidence and witnesses' accounts
\nabout Yorris' alleged role, police would be unable to prosecute
\nthe Golkar representative who was allegedly caught red-handed.<\/p>\n
He vowed to continue the investigation into the Assembly
\nmember's activities without a Presidential permit to do so.<\/p>\n
"Such a permit is needed only if the member was not caught
\nred-handed at the crime scene."<\/p>\n
Hamami urged Jakarta Military Command, which conducted the
\nraids, to help police question the personnel involved in the
\nraids about Yorris' presence.<\/p>\n
"The command could do the questioning and submit the results
\nto us."<\/p>\n
Army spokesman Brig. Gen. I Dewa Putu Rai, said the Army
\nheadquarters would consider revoking Yorris' membership in the
\nNational Disciplinary Movement if the allegations were proven.<\/p>\n
"We will revoke his membership as a volunteer in the National
\nDisciplinary Movement if he is later proven guilty of gambling,"
\nhe said after evaluating the relaunching of the movement.<\/p>\n
He said the authority to revoke Yorris' membership rested with
\nthe chief of the South Jakarta military district, in which Yorris
