Yoris arrested in connection to July 27 case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Police arrested on Tuesday Yoris
\nRaweyai for his alleged role in the violence which followed the
\nforcible takeover of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) office
\non July 27, 1996.<\/p>\n
"Yoris, the vice chairman of Pemuda Pancasila youth
\norganization, was arrested as of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, after police
\nquestioned him beginning at 10:30 a.m. This brings the number of
\nsuspects in the July 27 (1996) case to eight," National Police
\nspokesperson Brig. Gen. Dadang Garnida said.<\/p>\n
Dadang added that the police would soon question three retired
\nmilitary officers as witnesses in connection with the violence.<\/p>\n
He identified them as former Armed Forces chief Gen. (ret)
\nFeisal Tanjung, former Armed Forces chief of sociopolitical
\naffairs Lt. Gen. (ret) Syarwan Hamid and former Jakarta Military
\ncommander Lt. Gen. (ret) Sutiyoso, who is also the current
\ngovernor of Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Dadang said earlier that if the police questioning later
\nrevealed the retired generals had significant roles in the
\nbloodshed, their cases would be submitted to the Military Police
\nHeadquarters.<\/p>\n
"The three might be civilians now, but they were Army generals
\nduring the incident. Therefore, if they turn out to be suspects
\nfurther investigation will be carried out by the Military
\nPolice," Dadang said.<\/p>\n
PDI supporters loyal to Soerjadi took over the party's office
\non Jl. Diponegoro in Central Jakarta on July 27, 1996. At the
\ntime, the office was occupied by supporters of Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri, whom Soerjadi ousted as party head in a
\ngovernment-backed party congress in June.<\/p>\n
Many believe elements of the former Indonesian Armed Forces
\n(ABRI) were involved in the attack.<\/p>\n
The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) said at
\nleast five people died, 149 were injured and 23 went missing
