Yogyakarta warned of terrorism<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Yogyakarta governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X
\nordered intelligence bodies to gather information on the possible
\nentry of international terrorists into the province, Yogyakarta
\nPolice chief Brig. Gen. Saleh Saaf said here on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"We have been told to be more vigilant against the possibility
\nof terrorist infiltration into the province. They could pretend
\nto be tourists as Yogyakarta is a very popular tourist
\ndestination,\" he told reporters at the sidelines of a regional
\nintelligence bodies (Bakorinda) coordination meeting held at the
\nprovincial administration office at Kepatihan complex.<\/p>\n
Bakorinda consists of three intelligence services: military,
\npolice and the provincial administration.<\/p>\n
Saleh said that keeping Yogyakarta peaceful required hard work
\nand good cooperation between security personnel and other
\nregional government boards as well as various elements of
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
He said that the potential threats to Yogyakarta's security
\ndid not only come from local terrorists but also from overseas
\nones such international terrorist networks.<\/p>\n
Saleh, however, said that intelligence bodies had yet to find
\nany evidence of the existence of international terrorists in
\nYogyakarta.<\/p>\n
The intelligence meeting was for the first time held at the
\nprovincial administration office, following the implementation of
\nthe law on regional autonomy, effective June 1, 2001. Similar
\nintelligence meetings were previously held at the regional police

DENPASAR, Bali (JP): Bali police officers shot two alleged
\ndrugs dealers at two different locations on Thursday and seized a
\ntotal of 2.5 kilograms of marijuana from the suspects, an officer
\nsaid on Friday.<\/p>\n
Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit chief First Insp. Rudi
\nPurwiyanto said on Friday that the shooting took place after Dedy
\nJunaedi had tried to resist arrest and escape when the officers
\ncaught him selling one kilogram of marijuana to a buyer in the
\nBalum area on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"The two alleged buyers managed to escape with around Rp 3
\nmillion,\" Rudi said. \"Dedy then told the police a friend named
\nMunirwan had a large quantity of marijuana in his residence on
\nJl. Imam Bonjol.<\/p>\n
Deddy, however, tried to escape when guiding the officers to
\nMunirwan's house. \"We had to shoot him in the leg,\" said Rudi.<\/p>\n
While Deddy was rushed to hospital, the officers found
\nMunirwan's house and stormed the building. Munirwan was arrested
\nand the officers seized a total of 1.5 kilograms of dried
\nmarijuana.<\/p>\n
A native of Aceh, Munirwan tried to escape, and one of the

PALU, Central Sulawesi: Central Sulawesi Police will on Sept.
\n3 launch a special operation to protect and preserve the Lore
\nLindu Maleo National Park from illegal loggers and squatters,
\naccording to a police officer.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for Central Sulawesi Police Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus
\nSugianto said the launching of the operation was in response to
\nthe park management's request officially submitted some time ago.<\/p>\n
According to Agus, the operation would be conducted in
\ncooperation with the Donggala regency administration, the park
\nmanagement and the people living around the park.<\/p>\n
\"This is the police's attempt to protect the conservation
\narea, which has been ravaged by illegal squatters and loggers.
\nThe first stage of the operation will last three months,\" he
\nsaid. \"This operation is also meant to persuade squatters in the

PALU, Central Sulawesi: Hundreds of Muslim and Christian
\nfigures meeting at the Poso Military District office concluded a
\npeace deal on Thursday and pledged to stop violence, which has
\nbeen ravaging the regency of Poso for the last three years.<\/p>\n
Sponsored by a reconciliation team for Poso, the religious
\nleaders' meeting was filled with emotion. \"They embraced with
\neach other like brothers who had been missing each other. It was
\nlike a reunion,\" the team leader, Gumiyadi, said.<\/p>\n
He said the Muslims were led by H. Yahya Mangun, while Rev. J.
\nSanto led the Christians.<\/p>\n
Sectarian clashes in Poso have claimed thousands of lives,
\nwhile the regional and central governments have not been able to
\nstop them, despite their intensive efforts.<\/p>\n
Gumiyadi told reporters that the meeting resulted in two
\nimportant points. \"The first is that the warring groups must
\ndemonstrate their sincere goodwill to maintain and create peace,
\nthe second is that they must stop any kind of violence in the
\nland of Poso.\"<\/p>\n
\"Other evaluation meetings will be held periodically,\" he
