Yogya restricts plane traffic<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto
\nhas temporarily barred all Boeing 737 and DC-9 planes from using
\nthe Adisucipto airport in Yogyakarta after another plane, the
\nthird in three weeks, slid off the runway Monday night.<\/p>\n
As of yesterday, planes from each class of aircraft have been
\ndiverted from Yogyakarta to the Adisumarmo airport in Surakarta
\n(Solo), about 60 kilometers to the east.<\/p>\n
The airlines will provide overland transportation from Solo to
\nYogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Haryanto, who was in Yogyakarta to attend the opening ceremony
\nof the working conference of the state railway company Perumka,
\npersonally made the decision after inspecting the facility.<\/p>\n
He said the diversion will be enforced until the project to
\nextend Adisucipto's runway is completed.<\/p>\n
He promised that the government would disburse funding for the
\nproject as quickly as possible. \"We'll work day and night to
\ncomplete the work.\"<\/p>\n
The project, which was begun in 1992, was originally slated
\nfor completion at the end of this year.<\/p>\n
All three accidents at the Adisucipto airport occurred during
\nheavy rains. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.<\/p>\n
The latest accident affected a Boeing 737 plane belonging to
\nthe private airliner Sempati on Monday night, which was serving
\nthe Jakarta-Yogyakarta-Denpasar route.<\/p>\n
The head of the local branch of Perum Angkasa, the state
\nagency which manages the airport, Col. Soelaeman, explained that
\nthe plane overshot the runway by about 110 meters.<\/p>\n
Its front wheel is currently dug deep into the earth, he said,
\nadding that the airport would be closed to all planes until after
\nthe Sempati plane could be removed.<\/p>\n
A Merpati Nusantara Airlines plane met the same fate last
\nFriday. A plane belonging to Garuda Indonesia also overshot the
\nrunway late last year.<\/p>\n
Soelaeman said the runway at Adisucipto at present is only
\n1,800 meters and that both Boeing 737s and DC-9s need at least
\n2,400 meters for landing and take-off.<\/p>\n
Up until recently the airport has accepted both types of
\naircraft, although on the condition that the planes not be filled
\nto their full capacity, he said.<\/p>\n
The current project will extend the runway to 2,225 meters.
