Yogya artist has big plans for old socks<\/p>\n

Wanting to get rid of your smelly socks? Don't. Yogyakartan
\nartist Nindityo Adipurnomo might need them, badly.<\/p>\n
For his upcoming art project, the artist, known for his
\nartistic exploration of traditional konde (hair buns), requested
\npeople to donate their used socks -- after signing their names on
\nthem -- to him.<\/p>\n
The idea to collect signed, used socks came to him after he
\ngot an invitation from the fine art curator of the Humanities
\nResearch Center, Canberra, Australia, to take part in an
\nexhibition that will involve several reputable artists. The
\nexhibition is being organized as part of the main event, which
\ninclude workshops and a conference involving humanities experts
\nworldwide.<\/p>\n
As part of the program, Nindityo will give a talk for artists,
\na workshop and display collaborative works with the university's
\nfine art students.<\/p>\n
\"Then I came up with this idea, a collaborative-interactive
\nmodel for the artwork. Actually, I could have asked them (the
\norganizers) to prepare all the used socks there, and once I'd
\narrived, could have finished the installation. But then I thought
\nthat the strength of the idea lay in my effort to involve sock
\ndonors from both countries, Indonesia and Australia,\" he told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Under the plan, the socks will be turned into two missile-
\nshape constructions. The one created here will be named Rudal
\nIndonesia (Indonesian Missile) and the other, in Canberra, Rudal
\nAustralia (Australian Missile).<\/p>\n
\"With regard to the political geography, I shall install the
\nIndonesian missile with socks toward the center of the Australian
\ndefense; the Australian missile will be directed toward the
\nIndonesian center of defense. In between these two installed
\nobjects I shall place an object that will then represent the very
\nsuper-egotistic idea of being an artist!\" he said, without
\nelaborating what the \"object\" would be.<\/p>\n
So far, Nindityo has received a positive response to his
\nproject, for by the end of last week, six people had expressed a
\nwillingness to donate their used socks, each promising to give
\nhim more than 10 pairs. \"There will be around 60 socks at least,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
By early July, the socks are hoped to total about 200 pairs to
\n300 pairs from either country.<\/p>\n
In Australia, the sock collection is being handled by Drill
\nHall Gallery curator Christine Clark, who is also from the
\nHumanities Research Center.<\/p>\n
According to Nindityo, one problem was that many of his donors
\ndid not really understand that he only needed signed, used socks,
\neven ones with holes in them.<\/p>\n
\"Within the artwork context, these signed, used socks become
\nsignificant artifacts,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added that signed, used socks would also prevent the
\nincorporation of used socks from flea markets, which, within an
\nartistic context, would be perceived as mere material. \"In my
\nartistic context, these signed, used socks represent people's
\nvoices.\"<\/p>\n
The work will be displayed at Drill Hall Gallery and School of
\nArt, Australian National University, from late July to August
\nthis year.<\/p>\n
