Yogie tells PDI to resolve its internal conflicts<\/p>\n
SURAKARTA, Central Java (JP): Minister of Home Affairs Moh.
\nYogie SM told the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) here
\nyesterday to find an effective mechanism to resolve its internal
\ncrisis.<\/p>\n
Speaking before the celebration of the party's 22nd
\nanniversary at the Manahan Sports Hall, Yogie denied \"external
\nintervention\" into PDI's internal problems.<\/p>\n
\"External intervention\" is the current catchword for
\nallegations that the authorities are meddling in the internal
\nproblems of organizations.<\/p>\n
\"The most important thing for the PDI now is to find a way to
\ndetermine its own destiny, whether or not there is any external
\nintervention,\" said the minister, who is considered responsible
\nfor the nation's political development.<\/p>\n
He said he hoped that the crisis-hit party will be able to
\nresolve its internal conflict before it tarnishes the nation's
\nimage in the eyes of the world.<\/p>\n
Internal squabbles have plagued the PDI since its very
\nbeginnings in 1973.<\/p>\n
Recently one of its board members set up a rival national
\nleadership body to challenge chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri,
\nwho had dismissed him for backing an act of insubordination by
\nPDI activists in East Java.<\/p>\n
Gerry Mbatemoy, the former board member, and his followers in
\nIndonesia's most populated province, have been at the center of
\nthe new crisis, which started after a local East Java chapter
\nfailed to elect a provincial board.<\/p>\n
Latief Pudjosakti, one of the leading PDI activists in the
\nprovince, set up his own self-styled local board. Megawati said
\nhis action was illegal, but Gerry swore in the board members
\ndespite the fact he did not have the party's authorization to do
\nso.<\/p>\n
Yogie clarified his position as the official responsible in
\npolitical development in his speech. He said his position as
\n\"patron\" is consultative in nature because he does not supervise
\nthe activities of political entities.<\/p>\n
He said that the party's dependence on the government, which
\nis mostly financial in nature, should be reduced.<\/p>\n
\"A political party which is not independent will not be able
\nto produce good ideas.\"<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Megawati, eldest daughter of the late president
\nSukarno, told 15,000 cheering supporters in her speech to be
\naware of \"unconstitutional groups who want to paralyze the
\nparty\". She did not elaborate.<\/p>\n
\"I'm sure no healthy thinking PDI activists want to see their
\nparty in disarray,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The chairwoman also said the PDI would go on to fight against
\ngraft in the bureaucracy, collusion between corrupt officials and
\nbusinessmen, as well as abuse of power. (har\/tis)<\/p>",
