Yogie S.M. meets with maverick PDI chapter<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Seven representatives of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party (PDI) from East Java visited the Ministry of
\nHome Affairs yesterday to discuss the ongoing fierce battle for
\nthe leadership of the party's chapter in that province.<\/p>\n
According to Antara, the representatives, supporters of the
\nmaverick chapter leader Latief Pudjosakti, tried in vain to meet
\nwith Minister of Home Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M.<\/p>\n
Instead they were received by lower ranking officials of the
\nministry, who promised to pass their message on to the minister.<\/p>\n
The seven said they had come all the way from Surabaya, to
\ngive their side of the story, after Yogie met last week with PDI
\nchairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri to discuss the conflict.<\/p>\n
\"We want to make sure that the minister receives a more
\nbalanced picture of the situation,\" Sani Setiadi, one of the
\nseven representatives, said after the meeting.<\/p>\n
The six other representatives were Amin Hadi, Edi Kusno,
\nZakaria, Mas'oed, Sardo Suryo Pamubudi and Harun Al Rasyid.<\/p>\n
Latief Pudjosakti has been staking his claim to lead the
\nparty's East Java chapter, although his leadership is not
\nrecognized by the party's central executive board led by
\nMegawati.<\/p>\n
Latief, known to have strongly opposed Megawati's leadership,
\nhas aligned himself with other discontented party leaders to form
\na rival central executive board. Yogie has repeatedly said that
\nthe government only recognizes the leadership of Megawati.<\/p>\n
However, Megawati has been prevented from installing the East
\nJava chapter leader of her choice because the East Java
\nProvincial Administration refuses to issue a permit for the
\nceremony. This policy has lent the government open to criticisms
\nthat it is siding with Megawati's opponents.<\/p>\n
The government has insisted that the bickering in the party's
\nEast Java chapter should be resolved by the party's leaders
\nthemselves.<\/p>\n
\"We came here of our own accord. We weren't told by anyone,\"
\nSani told reporters after the meeting.<\/p>\n
However, some of the party's representatives who came
\nyesterday insisted that while they are disputing the central
\nexecutive board's policy on the leadership question in East Java,
\nthey remain loyal to the current central executive board. (emb)<\/p>",
