Yet another promise<\/p>\n
Ninety-six Indonesian tycoons met from Aug. 25-27 at the
\nIntercontinental Hotel in Jimbaran, Bali, and have made their
\nresolve public in the \"Bali Declaration\". The declaration
\ncontains seven points expressing their views, commitments,
\nresponsibilities and hopes for national development.<\/p>\n
While some parties have greeted the declaration with optimism,
\nothers remain skeptical. Such skepticism is only natural
\nconsidering our past experience. To be precise, this is not the
\nfirst time those big businesspersons have issued some sort of
\ndeclaration or statement promising to help surmount the social
\nand economic disparities that exist and to help small
\nentrepreneurs grow strong and robust.<\/p>\n
In 1984, for example, a number of Indonesian tycoons gathered
\nat the Hilton Hotel in Jakarta, where they stated their resolve
\nto help small businesses. Later, the idea of having \"foster
\nfathers\" to help small businesses was widely discussed, only to
\ndie shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n
Then, on a visit to the Tapos farm in Bogor a few years ago,
\nat the request of President Soeharto, they promised to grant
\nshares to cooperatives. How they've made good on this promise
\ndeserves to be explained.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, we hope that the present \"Bali Declaration\" will
\nbecome reality because the mood in which it was drafted made a
\ncertain difference. It was issued after three days of discussions
\nand lectures on making Pancasila a cultural component of our
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
