Yet another economic team<\/p>\n
In the four months that the government of President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid has been in power, not much economic progress
\nhas been made. Some observers even say the government has lost
\nthe momentum to stimulate economic growth.<\/p>\n
Aware of the obstacles (obstructing the effective operation of
\nhis economic team), Abdurrahman arrived at the idea of
\nestablishing an Economic Assistance Team to aid the Cabinet's
\neconomic team, led by Kwik Kian Gie. The new team would also
\nserve to bridge the disparate views offered by the National
\nEconomic Council and the National Business Development Council.
\nThe first, after all, operates in the realm of economic theory,
\nwhile the second is concerned more with the practical affairs of
\nbusiness.<\/p>\n
The problem, though, is not that the views presented by the
\ntwo existing councils need to be bridged, but how to increase the
\nefficacy of both, each according to its specific role.<\/p>\n
