'Yellownization' campaign criticized<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: The military is trying to tone down
\nthe controversy surrounding the government's \"yellownization\"
\nprogram, considered by many to be a covert campaign for the
\nruling Golkar party.<\/p>\n
The local government has been widely criticized for asking
\npeople to paint their houses and public facilities yellow, the
\ncolor of Golkar.<\/p>\n
Chief of the regional military command Maj. Gen. M. Yusuf
\nKartanegara said here Monday that the government would not take
\naction against residents who do not comply with the call.<\/p>\n
\"People are free to comply or not to comply with it,\" he said
\nto students of Sudirman University, many of whom have been
\nactively campaigning against the policy of coercion.<\/p>\n
Kartanegara called on the public not to overreact to the
\ngovernment program by staging demonstrations, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
A flurry of student-led demonstrations against the
\n\"yellownization\" campaign has taken place in several towns,
\nincluding Surakarta, Kudus and Purwokerto. (pan)<\/p>",
