Yasmine White: A designer showcasing Oriental jewelry<\/p>\n

Su in Korean means drops of water. The little stream of river
\nthat makes its way to the sea. Not as tremendous and powerful as
\nthe ocean, but meaningful.<\/p>\n
And so Korean jewelry designer Yasmine White named her
\ncollection Su.<\/p>\n
Maybe it also has something to do with her free-flowing
\nattitude, just like water.<\/p>\n
\"I'm not really commercial. I am just doing something that I
\nlike. And if people like it, that's double happiness for me,\" she
\nsaid while exhibiting her collection at Hotel Grand Mahakam in
\nSouth Jakarta, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
However, when asked further questions about herself, White
\ndeclined to answer.<\/p>\n
\"Please, don't ask about me, just about my jewelry.\"<\/p>\n
Based here for the past four years, White started the business
\nonly nine months ago designing and making the jewelry by hand.<\/p>\n
\"In the beginning, I just played with it. But then I started
\nto get serious,\" said White who spends from two hours to two days
\nto finish one piece.<\/p>\n
Her collection is oriental in style with oriental stones
\nincluding jade, coral, topaz and tumaline.<\/p>\n
\"Basically, I mix precious stones with semiprecious stones. As
\nyou can see, I combine them with gold, ivory, diamond, pearl and
\nsilver,\" she explained.<\/p>\n
Most of her collection are necklaces with beautiful stones and
\ngems woven together, resulting in a colorful and pretty necklace.<\/p>\n
Spherical shiny red stones, for example, are combined with a
\ngold pendant in the form of a goldfish.<\/p>\n
Aside from necklaces, White also makes brooches and bracelets.<\/p>\n
The style is classic-oriental, yet trendy, with the addition
\nof onyx, for example, and the spiral-like bracelet.<\/p>\n
White obtains the gemstones from Hong Kong and Thailand,
\nwhereas the pearl she obtains locally.<\/p>\n
\"This turquoise was bought from Tibet, so was the tumaline.
\nIt's not that Indonesian stones are not beautiful. Local stones
\nare very beautiful and diverse but it is hard to find anyone who
\ncan form and polish them well,\" White said.<\/p>\n
With prices ranging from over Rp 1 million (US$111) for each
\npiece -- up to Rp 6.9 million and more -- White's collection has
\nbegun to gain popularity.<\/p>\n
Exhibition organizer Anna Kwan said that wealthy ladies have
\nbeen craving to buy a piece from White's collection from the
\nfirst day of the exhibition on Tuesday afternoon. Around 50
\npercent of the pieces on exhibit were sold.<\/p>\n
White said compared to Koreans, Indonesians were more open to
\nnew things.<\/p>\n
\"People here have a lot of interest in jade, although it can't
\nbe said that jade is the most popular. I can understand because
\njade is such a mystical, historical and very oriental stone.
\nIndonesians have come to fully appreciate oriental jewelry after
\nthe government lifted the ban on the public display of Chinese
\nculture,\" said White, referring to the government regulation in
\n1999 that permitted Chinese-Indonesians to practice their culture
\nopenly.<\/p>\n
