Y.A.I. looks to the future in education<\/p>\n
The most important thing to look for when shopping for an
\neducation is quality lifelong training.<\/p>\n
Yayasan Administrasi Indonesia, with its wide range of
\ncourses, is a very good place to start.<\/p>\n
Nobody wants to pay a lot only to find that their school's
\neducational content just isn't up to date and they are now the
\nlast choice on every employer's list.<\/p>\n
Many educational institutions offer training in the basic or
\nadvanced skills required to enter a profession. But not all of
\nthem also provide the solid educational basis that prepares
\nstudents for lifelong learning.<\/p>\n
To make sure you get the best it helps to have an idea of what
\nyou want to do and where you want to go in life.<\/p>\n
If you see yourself hitching your ambitions to the development
\ntrain, then the training you need will be fairly specific.<\/p>\n
But when you are looking around, finding the right place can
\nbe very bewildering. There are numerous institutes, students and
\na multitude of courses short and long. How can you tell which
\nones are the best?<\/p>\n
You look for proof of success.<\/p>\n
Where do the graduates of a school get jobs? Are they good
\njobs? Do most graduates get jobs? Do they get them straight away
\nor does it take a long time?<\/p>\n
Is the training recognized and transferable? Can you study
\nfurther in the field if you want to, here and overseas?<\/p>\n
Other proofs of success can be found in the growth of the
\ninstitute you are looking at.<\/p>\n
Lets face it, schools do not become popular unless they
\ndeliver the goods.<\/p>\n
Yayasan Administrasi Indonesia (Y.A.I.) has had a remarkable
\nsuccess rate in terms of growth, student outcomes, industry
\nrecognition and international recognition.<\/p>\n
It was founded in 1972 by H. Julius Sjukur, with an accounting
\ncourse he taught himself. There were 27 students.<\/p>\n
The course proved such a success that in the second year, 77
\nstudents enrolled. A 300 percent growth in one year.<\/p>\n
The Accountancy Academy was founded in 1977 and quickly raced
\nto the lead among other institutions offering similar courses.
\nAnd since the 1980s, the institute has averaged a steady annual
\ngrowth in student numbers of about 30 percent to 40 percent.<\/p>\n
Y.A.I. now teaches more than 15,000 students a year.<\/p>\n
Lembaga Pendidikan Y.A.I. measures its success by its annual
\ngrowth rate and by the success of its students, 25 percent of
\nwhom maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, 4 percent
\ncum laude.<\/p>\n
The founder's mission was and still is to educate the whole
\nperson for the rest of their life.<\/p>\n
\"Educating the people of Indonesia to become business
\nprofessionals and to participate in the national development is
\nour founding mission,\" Julius said.<\/p>\n
\"Our business is to prepare students for success in advanced
\nstudy in their careers, and throughout their lives. We work very
\nhard to achieve this and we will continue to do so,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Because the demand was so high, Julius expanded Y.A.I. by
\nopening the University of Persada Indonesia Y.A.I., and the
\nY.A.I. Economic and Business Institute in 1985.<\/p>\n
Swati Suhaemi, Chairman of the Center for International
\nCooperation Y.A.I. said that while many other educational
\ninstitutes offered similar programs, Y.A.I. considered very few
\nits competitors.<\/p>\n
\"The institute continues to be popular and our students have a
\nremarkable employment success rate, nearly 100 percent of
\ngraduates progress directly into jobs,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Y.A.I.'s alumni can be found in the business sector in
\npositions ranging from clerical support to managerial jobs.<\/p>\n
\"About 20 percent of our students progress directly on to
\nhigher study, either abroad or in Indonesia,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Graduates' qualifications are recognized overseas and many
\nenter higher-education programs in other countries.<\/p>\n
Recognition is very important, our courses are recognized by
\nthe Ministry of Education throughout Indonesia, she said.<\/p>\n
Ir. Yudi Yulius, vice director of STIE Y.A.I. said the college
\nwas negotiating for ACBSP accreditation from the United States.
\n\"This is expected to come through in 1998,\" he said.<\/p>\n
ACBSP is a U.S. organization committed to excellence in
\nbusiness education. It approves accreditation for international
\nuniversities outside the U.S.<\/p>\n
\"We are constantly working at maintaining our edge and have
\nour sights set on maintaining this into the global and free-trade
\nera, this is why we are working hard on our international links,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
\"We want our students to have the best opportunities,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
With this in mind, Y.A.I. has developed strong ties with its
\npeer institutions in other countries, particularly the United
\nStates.<\/p>\n
A number of international experts work with the institute. On
\naverage they spend one or two weeks a year at Y.A.I. giving
\nseminars and lectures.<\/p>\n
This means that for a minimum of nine weeks a year, students
\nhave the benefit of outside international expertise on campus.<\/p>\n
These experts assist the staff in their joint continuing
\neducations by helping them pursue their second or third degrees,
\nand work with them on joint research projects.<\/p>\n
One of the international experts who has signed a memorandum
\nof understanding with Y.A.I. is Prof. Dr. Hanns-Martin Schoenfeld
\nfrom the University of Illinois in the United States. He is a
\nprofessor of accountancy and the author of 12 accountancy texts.
\nHe is also a member of the American Accountancy Association.<\/p>\n
Also collaborating with Y.A.I. are Prof. Dr. Thomas Filovich
\nfrom Cornell University; Prof. Dr. Maurice T Albertson, Prof. Dr.
\nEdwin Shinn and Prof. Dr. Charles O Neidt, all from Colorado
\nState University; Prof. Dr. David J Harris from the University of
\nCentral Oklahoma; Dr. Guy Meublat from Universite Paris Nord,
\nFrance; and Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter Reineke from the University
\nCollege of Engineering and Business Studies, in Dresden, Germany.<\/p>\n
Y.A.I. is contemplating similar arrangements with Cleveland
\nState University, University of Illinois and University of
\nCentral Oklahoma.<\/p>\n
Fields of study<\/p>\n
Y.A.I. is one of the five biggest private university
\nfoundations in Jakarta and offers higher education in more than
\n10 academic and professional fields.<\/p>\n
The college is divided into three institutions: the University
\nof Persada Indonesia Y.A.I. (UPI), Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi
\nY.A.I. (STIE), and Akademi Akuntansi (AA).<\/p>\n
UPI has over 6,000 students, STIE over 5,000 students and AA
\nabout 4,000 students.<\/p>\n
The University of Persada Indonesia Y.A.I.<\/p>\n
The University of Persada Indonesia was first opened with
\nthree schools. It now houses five schools and a graduate school.<\/p>\n
The School of Business offers undergraduate majors in
\naccounting and management, and a management diploma.<\/p>\n
Its Psychology School offers undergraduate majors in
\nexperimental, education, social, clinical, development, and
\norganization and industry psychology.<\/p>\n
In the School of Civil and Planning Engineering, undergraduate
\ncourses are offered in cooperation with the Institute of
\nTechnology Bandung; students can major in architecture and civil
\nengineering.<\/p>\n
Computer whizzes would probably be drawn to the School of
\nIndustrial Technology's undergraduate programs in computer
\nscience and management and industrial technology. Or the diploma
\nin computer science.<\/p>\n
For those interested in combining their interests in
\nagriculture and business, there are undergraduate programs in
\nagricultural business and agricultural technology available from
\nthe School of Agriculture.<\/p>\n
Graduate Programs<\/p>\n
The institute began offering graduate programs in 1993. Today,
\nsix majors are on offer; in accounting, finance, human resources,
\ninformation systems, production and operation management and
\nbanking.<\/p>\n
The graduate school of management offers students the
\nopportunity of studying one or two semesters abroad at the
\nuniversities linked to the institute.<\/p>\n
Many of the Magister Management courses are given in two
\nlanguages, Indonesian and English, to facilitate students ability
\nto work in an international environment.<\/p>\n
Y.A.I. Economics and Business Institute<\/p>\n
The Economics and Business Institute was setup specifically to
\ncreate business professionals adjusted to technological
\ndevelopment. There are three available majors, accounting,
\nfinancial and banking management and accounting information
\nsystems.<\/p>\n
Accounting Academy and Short courses.<\/p>\n
The Accounting Academy is Y.A.I.'s oldest school and offers
\nprofessional diplomas for students wanting to work as
\naccountants.<\/p>\n
Shorter accounting, English and tax courses are also available
\nfor professionals wanting to add to their qualifications, or for
\npeople wanting to explore a possible career interest.<\/p>\n
The English-language laboratories are state-of-the-art.<\/p>\n

Public transport is no problem because they are all in the
\nJakarta business district.<\/p>\n
There are two four-story buildings in Kelapa Gading, one
\neight-story building at Kramat Raya, a nine-story building at
\nSalemba Raya 9, and a five-story building at Imam Bonjol 72.<\/p>\n
Currently on its way up is a 20-story building at Salemba Raya
\n10, which will make the Salemba Raya campus the largest in the
\ngroup.<\/p>\n
