Probolinggo, East Java (ANTARA) - The sacred Yadnya Kasada 1948 Saka\n(2026 CE) series began with the Mendak Tirta ritual at Madakaripura\nWaterfall in Negororejo Village, Probolinggo Regency, on Friday (29\nMay).<\/p>\n
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has announced a\ntemporary closure of the Bromo tourist area from 30 May to 2 June 2026\nto honour the Yadnya Kasada ritual conducted by the Tengger\ncommunity.<\/p>\n
Dozens of Tengger residents walked to the sacred spring sources at\nMadakaripura to collect holy water for purifying ritual items ahead of\nthe Yadnya Kasada climax at Pura Luhur Poten in Bromo\u2019s Sea of Sand.<\/p>\n
The ceremony proceeded solemnly with a collective prayer and\nofferings of agricultural produce. The ritual was led by Ngadas Village\ncustodian Slamet, who recited sacred mantras before priests and Tengger\nelders collected the water.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe holy water collected from four sacred springs is combined and\nused to purify ritual items at Pura Luhur Poten before the Yadnya Kasada\nclimax,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTengger communities from three regions collect water simultaneously.\nProbolinggo residents go to Madakaripura, Pasuruan residents to\nWidodaren, and Lumajang residents to Ranu Pane,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Madakaripura was chosen as the ritual site due to its strong\nhistorical significance for the Tengger people, as it is believed to be\nwhere Patih Gajah Mada attained moksha after receiving a land grant from\nKing Hayam Wuruk, as recorded in the Negarakertagama manuscript.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis belief imbues Madakaripura\u2019s spring with sacredness and\nblessings passed down by ancestors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Sukapura Subdistrict Head Nur Rachmat Sholeh stated that\nthe government will continue to support the preservation of the Tengger\ncommunity\u2019s traditions and culture, handed down through generations.<\/p>\n
\u201cMendak Tirta is an annual ritual of the Tengger people with high\nspiritual and cultural value. The government will continue to support\nits preservation for future generations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Mendak Tirta ritual marks the start of the Yadnya Kasada series\nrooted in the legend of Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. The tradition is\nperformed as gratitude to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and in honour of the\nTengger ancestors\u2019 teachings passed down through generations.<\/p>\n
