Beijing - Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a meeting with US\nPresident Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday (14\/5), emphasised the\nimportance of building stable China-US relations and avoiding the\n\u2018Thucydides Trap.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018Can China and the United States escape the \u2019Thucydides Trap\u2019 and\ncreate a new paradigm for relations between major countries? Can we\njointly address global challenges and provide greater stability for the\nworld?\u2019 said President Xi during the meeting with President Trump at the\nGreat Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday (14\/5), as stated on the\nofficial website of China\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n
The Thucydides Trap refers to the tense situation when a rising great\npower (or state) is perceived as threatening to displace an established\npower, which historically often leads to war.<\/p>\n
In this context, the reference can be interpreted in light of China\u2019s\ncontinuously growing power, which is seen as challenging US global\nleadership.<\/p>\n
Thucydides himself was an ancient Greek historian who wrote the book\n\u2018History of the Peloponnesian War,\u2019 recounting the war between Athens\nand Sparta in the 5th century BC. His work is regarded as the first\npolitical and moral analysis of inter-state war, making him considered\nthe father of scientific history and political realism.<\/p>\n
\u2018These are important questions for history, for the world, and for\nthe public. These are questions of our era that we, as leaders of major\ncountries, need to answer together,\u2019 said Xi.<\/p>\n
He also expressed readiness to work with Trump to determine the\ndirection and steer the giant ship of China-US relations, making 2026 a\nhistoric and important year that opens a new chapter in China-US\nrelations.<\/p>\n
President Xi also stressed that China is committed to developing\nstable, good, and sustainable China-US relations.<\/p>\n
\u2018I have agreed with President Trump on a new vision for building a\nconstructive and strategically stable China-US relationship. This will\nprovide strategic guidance for China-US relations over the next three\nyears and beyond, and will be welcomed by the people of both countries\nand the international community,\u2019 said Xi.<\/p>\n
\u2018Constructive strategic stability,\u2019 according to Xi, means positive\nstability with cooperation as the foundation, healthy stability with\ncompetition within reasonable bounds, constant stability with manageable\ndifferences, and enduring stability with anticipated peace.<\/p>\n
President Xi noted that China-US economic and trade relations are\nmutually beneficial and win-win in nature.<\/p>\n
\u2018If there are differences of opinion and frictions, equal\nconsultation is the only correct choice. Yesterday, our economic and\ntrade teams achieved generally balanced and positive results. This is\ngood news for the people of both countries and the world,\u2019 explained\nXi.<\/p>\n
Xi stated that both countries must jointly maintain the positive\nmomentum that we have worked hard to create.<\/p>\n
