Beijing (ANTARA) - Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to\ntravel to Washington for a state visit and an important meeting with US\nPresident Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
With this visit, both presidents are expected to conclude a series of\nreciprocal visits over recent months. The upcoming trip will mark Xi\u2019s\nsecond state visit to the US since his first in 2015.<\/p>\n
After more than a decade, the world\u2019s most significant bilateral\nrelationship has undergone a turbulent journey. How Beijing and\nWashington manage their relationship and find space for cooperation is\nbecoming increasingly influential for both nations and the world.<\/p>\n
New Vision<\/p>\n
In May, while hosting Trump in Beijing, Xi opened their discussions\nwith three questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan China and the US overcome the Thucydides Trap and create a new\nparadigm for relations between major powers? Can we together face global\nchallenges and provide greater stability to the world? Can we together\nbuild a bright future for our bilateral relations for the prosperity of\nboth nations and the future of humanity?\u201d<\/p>\n
These questions were posed against a backdrop of turbulent bilateral\nrelations lasting years, ranging from trade disputes to technology\nrestrictions. Xi has repeatedly emphasised the need to find the right\nway for the world\u2019s two great powers to interact well.<\/p>\n
The high-level meeting in Beijing provided new momentum for these\nefforts. Xi and Trump have agreed on a new vision to build constructive\nChina-US relations with strategic stability over the next three years\nand beyond.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis marks the first time in over a decade that China and the US\nhave reached a consensus on how to define the relationship, which is\nwidely recognised by leaders from both sides,\u201d said Da Wei, director of\nthe Centre for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua\nUniversity.<\/p>\n
For some time, China-US relations have followed the path set by both\nleaders. \u201cHead-of-state diplomacy serves as the anchor for China-US\nrelations,\u201d stated Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday (17\/9)\nduring a telephone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio as part\nof the preparations for the upcoming meeting.<\/p>\n
Since Trump\u2019s re-election, Xi has continued to maintain communication\nwith him through various means, such as face-to-face meetings and\ntelephone calls, which occasionally take place in a casual format.<\/p>\n
During the visit last May, Xi invited Trump to Zhongnanhai, the\nleadership complex in central Beijing, for a closed-door meeting\u2014an\ninvitation extended to only a handful of foreign leaders.<\/p>\n
Xi and Trump walked through the complex\u2019s gardens, chatting and\noccasionally pausing to admire the towering ancient trees and blooming\nChinese roses.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile President Trump hopes to make America great again, I am\ncommitted to leading the Chinese people towards national rejuvenation,\u201d\nXi remarked as the two leaders sat together for tea.<\/p>\n
Similar interactions have occurred since Xi\u2019s first meeting with\nTrump in 2017. At Mar-a-Lago, Trump\u2019s private residence in Florida, Xi\npresented him with a piece of Chinese calligraphy inscribed with an\nancient proverb: \u201cA nine-story tower begins from a mere mound of earth;\na journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.\u201d<\/p>\n
Xi encouraged both sides to remain on the right track, avoid\ndisruptions, and promote the development of stable bilateral\nrelations.<\/p>\n
Moments outside formal meeting tables such as these have become a\nhallmark of Xi\u2019s interactions with Trump, providing a more personal\natmosphere to understand each other\u2019s countries and perspectives.<\/p>\n
