Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the acceleration of a new energy system to safeguard national energy security, amid global energy market volatility triggered by the Iran conflict. He emphasised the development of hydropower, ecological protection, and the safe expansion of nuclear energy, while affirming the continued role of coal-fired power plants as a foundational element. This push towards a greener, more diverse, and resilient energy system is seen as crucial for China's economic development, with ongoing major projects like the world's largest hydropower dam in Tibet underscoring the commitment.

President of China Xi Jinping is pushing for the acceleration of the
development of a new energy system to maintain national energy
security.

This call comes as the global energy market is in turmoil following
the Iran conflict.

Xi also emphasised the development of hydropower, ecological
protection, and the safe and orderly expansion of nuclear energy,
according to a CCTV report cited by Reuters on Monday (6/4/2026).

“The Party Central Committee has gained a deep understanding of
global energy development trends and made major decisions by advancing
the new energy security strategy in depth,” he said.

Xi did not mention the conflict directly. This statement comes as the
war in the Middle East enters its fifth week and triggers a surge in
global energy prices.

Coal accounts for more than 50 percent of the energy mix. Imports
through the Strait of Hormuz are only about 5 percent of total energy
consumption.

“The path we have taken by being the first to develop wind and solar
power has now proven to be farsighted. At the same time, coal-fired
power plants remain the foundation of our energy system and must
continue to play a supporting role,” said Xi.

China operates more than half of the world’s coal-fired power plant
capacity. This position makes it the world’s largest carbon emitter.

“A newer, greener, more diverse, and more resilient energy system
will provide strong guarantees for China’s energy security and economic
development,” wrote CCTV.

Energy project development continues to progress. China began
construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam in the east of the
Tibetan Plateau last July.

Other projects have also been initiated. China General Nuclear Power
Group is building a thermal solar power plant at an altitude of 4,550
metres in Tibet.
",
