The article discusses how human-interest feature writing can inspire short fiction, while distinguishing journalism’s obligations to fact and accuracy from fiction’s freedom of imagination. It argues that adapting a feature into a short story involves reinterpreting human experience through narrative and the writer’s imagination, rather than simply retelling reality.

Writing short stories inspired by features is a rewarding
process.

Surabaya (ANTARA) – There are many sources of ideas for literary
writing, particularly short stories. Ideas can come from unusual life
experiences, reading other people’s short stories, friends’ stories,
observing social ironies, watching films, looking at paintings, reading
the news, or engaging with feature stories.

A feature, known in Indonesian as karkhas, is a form of
journalism written in a narrative style and with strong human interest.
In form, a feature is already a story. This is the rationale for viewing
it as a potentially rich source of inspiration for short-story
writing.

A feature is understood as a form of journalism bound by facts, data
accuracy and responsibility to reality. A short story, by contrast,
belongs to the realm of imaginative freedom, where writers create a ‘new
world’ that need not correspond to what actually happens in life.

Their common ground is that both grow from the same roots: human
values.

The following discussion explores how factual writing such as a
feature can inspire fiction and convey meaning at a deeper level.

Writing a short story based on a feature is not simply a matter of
retelling reality. It is a process of reinterpreting human experience
through narrative, the free play of imagination and the unique set of
mental experiences each short-story writer possesses.

Philosophical reasons
",
