        "content": "<p>Writer Kuntowijoyo leaves legacy to RI<\/p>\n<p>Slamet Susanto and Tarko Sudiarno, The Jakarta Post, Yogyakarta<\/p>\n<p>Kuntowijoyo, a prominent writer and historian, died on Tuesday at<br>\nSardjito Hospital in Yogyakarta after suffering from<br>\nmeningoencephalitis for more than 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The 63-year-old lecturer is survived by his wife<br>\nSusilaningsih, 58 and two sons Punang Amarireja, 34 and Alun<br>\nParadita, 23.<\/p>\n<p>Relatives said Kuntowijoyo was a productive person who always<br>\nthrew himself into things. He was still writing academic articles<br>\n13 years after being hit by the disabling brain disease.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He kept typing although with only one finger. He never<br>\ncomplained about his illness,&quot; said his sister-in-law Eny<br>\nWijayanti.<\/p>\n<p>Kuntowijoyo, who was born in Klaten, Central Java, completed<br>\nhis undergraduate studies at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta<br>\nin 1969. He later obtained a doctorate degree in history from<br>\nColumbia University in 1980, after completing a dissertation<br>\ntitled &quot;Social Change in An Agrarian Society: Madura, 1850-1940.&quot;<br>\nThe dissertation turned out to be very influential among social<br>\nobservers in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He went back to UGM after completing his studies in the U.S<br>\nand continued to teach in the Letters Faculty at Gadjah Mada.<\/p>\n<p>Kuntowijoyo, a noted columnist, has also long been active in<br>\ncultural organizations.<\/p>\n<p>He once chaired the Mantika Study Group, which mainly<br>\ndiscusses performing arts. This brought him close to prominent<br>\nartists and film directors such as Arifin C. Noer, Ikranagara and<br>\nChaerul Umam. He has written many short stories, poets and novels<br>\nand won several literary awards.<\/p>\n<p>Kuntowijoyo also wrote extensively about Islamic topics. Two<br>\nof his books that became influential in Islamic circles were <br>\nParadigma Islam (Islam Paradigm) and Khotbah Di Atas Bukit<br>\n(Preach Over the Hill).<\/p>\n<p>He will be buried on Wednesday.<\/p>",
