Worldwide Internet service launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Signet Pratama, a subsidiary of the
\nprivately-owned PT Sigma Cipta Caraka, yesterday launched their
\nnew Internet service, claiming to be the first that offers
\ninternational roaming.<\/p>\n
\"Users registered in Indonesia, who are traveling to the
\nUnited States, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong
\nKong, Switzerland and Britain will be able to reach Signet by
\ndialing local numbers, without paying high additional fees,\" said
\nCompany Managing Director Sudjiwo Husodo yesterday.<\/p>\n
He stated providers must offer something innovative in the
\nincreasingly competitive competition of the rapidly expanding
\nInternet sector.<\/p>\n
\"I believe other Internet service providers may soon follow
\nSignet's step, in offering international roaming facilities,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
At least 30 firms have won licenses to provide Internet
\nservices in Indonesia, but less than 20 are currently in
\noperation.<\/p>\n
Husodo said Signet, set up in 1995 as an information
\ntechnology company, would also offer its expertise in providing
\ninter-networking and multi-protocol solutions.<\/p>\n
\"Due to Signet's background as a solution provider, our target
\nmarket comprises only corporate customers,\" he said, adding the
\ncompany expected to net some 50 customers by 1997.<\/p>\n
He said Signet offered a 512-kilobyte band width, with 200
\ntelephone lines.<\/p>\n
Signet's service, reachable at http:\/\/www.sig.net.id, is also
\navailable in 14 areas across Indonesia, including Yogyakarta,
\nSemarang, Central Java, Palembang, South Sumatra, Manado, North
\nSulawesi, Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan and Denpasar, Bali.<\/p>\n
The company has set monthly subscription charges between US$40
