        "content": "<p>World's food marketing agencies open workshop<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Food Marketing Agencies<br>\n(AFMA) in cooperation with the United Nations' Food and<br>\nAgriculture Organization (FAO) and Indonesia's State Logistics<br>\nAgency (Bulog) began a three-day workshop in Jakarta yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Participants at the workshop, which will continue through<br>\nFriday, are discussing the problems and constraints in<br>\nimplementing marketing strategies to improve public welfare<br>\nthrough the generation of income and employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>AFMA's executive director M.R. Satyal said that the workshop<br>\nwas a forum for sharing experiences between the members about<br>\ntheir strategies in food policies.<\/p>\n<p>\"The workshop will also study the role of state-owned food<br>\nmarketing bodies, cooperatives and private agencies in promoting<br>\nthe income of farmers,\" Satyal said.<\/p>\n<p>Bulog chairman Beddu Amang, who officially opened the<br>\nworkshop, said that the food marketing agencies in the Asia<br>\nPacific region should use AFMA and the workshop to share views<br>\nand experiences in anticipating various changes in the current<br>\nglobalization era, such as the liberalization of economies.<\/p>\n<p>\"Acknowledging the latest development in most food marketing<br>\nagencies, I would like to suggest that AFMA expand its<br>\nmembership, not only to government food marketing agencies, but<br>\nalso to semi-private companies,\" Beddu said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bangkok-based AFMA, which was established in 1983 under<br>\nthe support of the FAO, is an international association of<br>\nmarketing agencies.<\/p>\n<p>It currently has 23 members from 11 countries including China,<br>\nIndia, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the<br>\nPhilippines, Ceylon, Vietnam and host Indonesia. It has two<br>\nmembers from Indonesia, namely Bulog and the directorate general<br>\nof edible plants and horticulture.<\/p>\n<p>Coinciding with the workshop, AFMA also held its 17th<br>\nexecutive committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting aimed to evaluate the association's results and to<br>\nset up its working program for the next period.<\/p>\n<p>Some 50 participants, representing 13 marketing agencies from<br>\nseven countries, attended the workshop.
