World's first intelligence academy to open in Batam<\/p>\n

The world's first intelligence colleges will be opened in Batam,
\nRiau, and Sentul, West Java, to introduce the art of espionage as
\na science and to improve the capability of national intelligence
\nagents.<\/p>\n
The construction of school facilities in Batam and Sentul is
\nto break ground on Wednesday, with President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri slated to officiate the construction here.<\/p>\n
The college in Sentul will offer an undergraduate program,
\nwhile the one in Batam is to provide a graduate program, said
\nNational Intelligence Agency (BIN) director Gen. (ret)
\nHendropriyono.<\/p>\n
The institutions will equip students with the knowledge and
\nskills to research and analyze intelligence data and to use
\ninformation technology in supporting espionage activities.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia will be the first country to open institutions
\noffering bachelor's and master's degrees that will introduce
\nintelligence as a science,\" Hendropriyono said here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"Realizing the increasing security threats around the world,
\nwe have to respond to the problems by formulating the art of
\nintelligence as science,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He underlined that studying intelligence science will be
\nbeneficial not only for intelligence agents, but also for
\ncivilians in their daily lives and work.<\/p>\n
The two institutions -- scheduled to be completed in 10 months
\n-- will be open to the general public, to both Indonesians and
\nforeigners and the language of instruction is to be in English.<\/p>\n
The institutions are to cooperate with state-run University of
\nIndonesia (UI) and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).<\/p>\n
The first admission class of around 100 students are currently
\ntaking intelligence courses at the two state-run universities.<\/p>\n
Hendropriyono said citizens from seven member countries of the
\nAssociation of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) -- both civilians
\nand intelligence officers -- were among this first batch of
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
The intelligence capabilities of Indonesia have been deemed
\none of the weakest in the region, and thus the country was unable
\nto anticipate massive terror attacks such as the Bali bombing
\nlast year.<\/p>\n
UI rector Usman Chatib Warsa said the establishment of the
\nintelligence schools aimed to address this weak point in
\nIndonesia's intelligence operation.<\/p>\n
\"This is why we have to formulate a science to increase our
\ncapabilities and meet the international standards of the
\nintelligence community,\" he said.<\/p>",
