World community to help restore ruined Maluku<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku (JP): The international community is ready to
\nhelp Indonesia restore riot-torn Maluku, United Nations
\nDevelopment Program resident coordinator Ravi Rajan said here on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Ravi Rajan, who was in Ambon along with foreign envoys seeking
\ninformation on conditions in the areas affected by unrest, said
\nthe international community was ready to help Indonesia with its
\nreconstruction, reconciliation and rehabilitation programs.<\/p>\n
Asked about security on Ambon island and Central and North
\nMaluku, Rajan said it was an internal affair of the government of
\nIndonesia and foreign countries could not interfere.<\/p>\n
When asked about funds the international bodies would donate
\nfor the reconstruction and rehabilitation programs, Rajan said
\nthat detailed talks on that would be held with foreign
\nambassadors here and representatives of international bodies.<\/p>\n
Security guarantees for the personnel of international bodies
\nworking here was a must, he said.<\/p>\n
Rajan visited Ambon with British ambassador Robin Christopher,
\nEgyptian ambassador envoy Abdel Rahim Ismail Shalaby, Japanese
\ndeputy ambassador Jun Yamasaki, the Netherlands embassy's press
\nspokesman BSM Berendsen, Phillip Clarke from the World Food
\nProgram and Andrew Harper from the United Nations High
\nCommissioner. Indonesia's settlement and regional development
\nminister Erna Witoelar accompanied the foreign envoys.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile chief of Pattimura Military Command Brig. Gen. Max
\nTamaela told reporters that a special team had been formed to
\ninvestigate the Huruku and Sameth riots on Jan. 23, which claimed
\n25 lives.<\/p>\n
\"There are indications that police and military officers
\nbecame involved in the sectarian clashes,\" Tamaela said.<\/p>\n
Tamaela's statements referred to reports from local people
\nthat officers from the Police Mobile Brigade unit and 303
\nInfantry Battalion were involved in the fighting.<\/p>\n
According to Tamaela, the commander of the military
\nsubdistrict should have detected the movement of people before
\nthe fighting, which involved hundreds of people from four
\nvillages, took place. \"How could hundreds of people moving from
\none place to another be undetected?\"<\/p>\n
When asked by journalists how his intelligence team failed to
\ndetect the early indications of rioting in the province, Tamaela
\nmerely said, \"There was a weakness.\"<\/p>\n
In a related development, the North Maluku legislature decided
\nalmost unanimously on Thursday to dismiss Sultan of Ternate,
\nMudaffar Syah, as chairman of the council. (49\/sur)<\/p>",
