World Bank president visits Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn is due
\nin Denpasar, Bali, today at the start of his five-day visit to
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Finance said in a statement yesterday that
\nWolfensohn is scheduled to meet with President Soeharto on May
\n15, and prior to that, with Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad
\nto discuss the World Bank's aid to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The World Bank currently leads an international consortium of
\ndonor countries to Indonesia, called the Consultative Group on
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
The group, formed in 1992 to replace the Netherlands-led
\nInter-Governmental Group on Indonesia, has provided nearly US$5
\nbillion in assistance each year since its formation.<\/p>\n
The World Bank-led group, which has met annually, is scheduled
\nto meet again in early July to discuss new assistance to
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Wolfensohn's visit to Indonesia is his first here since he
\nassumed the World Bank's chairmanship in June last year.<\/p>\n
During his visit, Wolfensohn will be accompanied by Executive
\nDirector of World Bank in Indonesia Suwan Pasugwad and the bank's
\nVice President for East Asia and the Pacific Russel Cheetham.<\/p>\n
Besides meeting with Indonesian officials, Wolfensohn is
\nscheduled to speak at the Indonesia Summit, a seminar to be
\nopened by Soeharto next Monday. Wolfensohn will speak on
\nSustainable Development: Indonesia's Experience.<\/p>\n
Wolfensohn is also scheduled to hold discussions with
\nrepresentatives of a number of non-governmental organizations,
\nfemale intellectuals, business people, lecturers at the
\nYogyakarta Institute of Teacher Training and Education and the
\nYogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University, as well as those
\nparticipating in the World Bank-sponsored projects.<\/p>\n
He plans to visit a number of projects which are financed by
\nthe International Finance Corporation, an affiliate of the World
\nBank.<\/p>\n
The projects to be visited by Wolfensohn include a non-formal
\neducational center in West Nusa Tenggara, Indorama's textile
\nfactory in Purwakarta, West Java, a village infrastructure
\nproject in Magelang, Central Java, and a revolving fund project
