True to the above statement, The Jakarta Post, in
\ncommemoration of International AIDS Day on Dec. 1, had extensive
\ncoverage on AIDS and gave refreshing insight into this deadly
\ndisease. Isn't it better to tell the bitter truths behind AIDS?<\/p>\n
The article dealing with detailed instructions on how to use a
\ncondom properly, effectively, indeed raised one's eyebrows --
\nnevertheless, it was highly instructive!<\/p>\n
A view has been expressed in the paper's columns that instead
\nof promoting the use of condoms in red-light districts, we should
\ntry to eliminate prostitution. Well, this suggestion is
\nidealistic. The reality is that prostitution is the oldest-
\npracticed profession the world has ever known. We just can't wish
\nit away, though concerted efforts must still be made to improve
\nmoral behavior in society.<\/p>\n
Under the existing circumstances, it would only be prudent to
\neducate prostitutes and sex-workers about the dangers of free sex
\nand AIDS. Prostitutes in their own interest, as also in the
\ninterest of the community, must insist that their clients use
\ncondoms. This is the paramount need of the hour to stave off the
\nAIDS disaster that is attacking humanity.<\/p>\n
Sex is an inborn urge. After all, God meant us to enjoy sex,
\naccording to a British bishop who authored a marriage manual. But
\nAIDS is solid proof to substantiate the fact that liberty without
\ndiscipline can only lead to absolute anarchy.<\/p>\n
AIDS can affect anyone, anytime, in any place on earth. Even a
\nhighly moralistic person, despite due care, may fall victim
\nthrough possible negligence of medical personnel in clinics and
\nhospitals.<\/p>\n
In the olden days, sex outside marriage was tolerated as an
\nindividualistic act. But now the situation has thoroughly changed
\nand it goes beyond individuals. When individual behavior starts
\naffecting society there must be some restrictions.<\/p>\n
Such careless behavior has very grave implications not only to
\nthe person concerned but also to his family, society and the
\ncountry at large. He just can't be unconcerned about the
\navoidable risks he is exposing the society to.<\/p>\n
Let's wake up to the reality that AIDS is evil. We should do
\neverything possible to control the situation, both collectively
\nand as individuals. The catastrophe that has befallen the human
\nrace can be checked only by regulating our conduct.<\/p>\n
I'm calling on all men -- please, common sense dictates that
\nwe exercise restraint. Let's realize our responsibility towards
\nour family that the society we live in.<\/p>\n
