Workshop on children with special needs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A seminar and workshop on children with special
\nneeds will be held at the auditorium of the Graha Sucofindo
\nbuilding on Jl. Raya Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The seminar, jointly organized by the Pantara Foundation and
\nthe Autisma Foundation, will discuss various issues dealing with
\ntreatment, school curricula and therapies for children with
\nspecial needs.<\/p>\n
The seminar will present noted educator and therapist from
\nPerth, West Australia, along with special educator Malliga Nalu
\nand occupational therapist Luci Webb.<\/p>\n
Among the topics to be discussed are the Individualized
\nCurriculum (Maliga Nalu) and the Profile of a Child with Special
\nNeeds.<\/p>\n
In addition to the seminar, the organizers will hold special
\nworkshops for parents, teachers and related experts.<\/p>\n
The seminar is aimed at providing information for parents and
\neducators of children with learning difficulties.<\/p>\n
Many Indonesian children suffer mild to severe learning
\ndifficulties, yet only few receive proper treatment and
\neducation.<\/p>\n
The Pantara Foundation is one of a number of nonprofit
\norganizations running special schools for children with learning
\ndifficulties.<\/p>\n
The learning difficulties affect children's language, writing,
\ncounting and reading skills. Some children may only suffer
\nreading difficulties, with others experience difficulties from a
\ncombination of the problems.<\/p>\n
Most of the children have normal to high IQ levels. Many
\nparents, teachers and even medical professionals still do not
\nunderstand the learning difficulties and do not know how to cope
\nwith the problems.<\/p>\n
