        "content": "<p>Workers urged not to join demonstrations<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Workers in Greater Jakarta were asked Saturday<br>\nto be vigilant and to turn down invitations by a labor union<br>\nwhich was advertising a massive demonstration from yesterday<br>\nthrough tomorrow, former activists said.<\/p>\n<p>HR Soejoedono, the head of the Communication Forum for Those<br>\nIntending to Continue the Spirit of the Independence Struggle<br>\nPioneers, said Saturday that because of the crisis the planned<br>\ndemonstration would only further burden the public, especially<br>\nthe workers themselves and their companies because production<br>\nactivities would be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied by H Rasyid Emilly, the head of the '66 Exponent<br>\nSelf-reliant Institution, Soejoedono said that as the government<br>\nhad agreed to raise regional minimum wages by 15 percent as of<br>\nAug. 1, workers should show gratitude that at a time of crisis<br>\ntheir welfare was still being considered.<\/p>\n<p>Soejoedono was quoted by Antara that his forum's board<br>\nmembers, who are also directors of companies in Tangerang, had<br>\nreceived information of a planned three-day demonstration<br>\nbeginning yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting a worker's report, he said that the invitation, issued<br>\nby the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI) led by Muchtar<br>\nPakpahan, would threaten the economy and the unity of the nation.<br>\nNo details of the demands to be raised at the demonstration were<br>\navailable.<\/p>\n<p>\"We all know that in such a time of crisis it is difficult for<br>\nany company to continue operating, let alone raise wages and<br>\nother allowances,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rasyid Emilly echoed Soejoedono's call for workers not to be<br>\neasily provoked by SBSI to join the demonstration but urged<br>\nbusinessmen to improve cooperation with unions to help reach<br>\nmutual labor agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Rasyid also asked the government to summon Muchtar Pakpahan to<br>\nquestion him about his reasons for encouraging workers to<br>\nprotest.
