Workers rally at S. Korea Embassy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Dozens of factory workers demonstrated outside the
\nSouth Korea Embassy on Jl. Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta on
\nWednesday, and demanded that the embassy help them after
\nthousands were laid off by Korean companies and not paid as much
\nas they expected.<\/p>\n
The workers, grouped in the Primary Work Labor Union (SBKU)
\nand the United Indonesian Labor Action (KASBI), said three South
\nKorean companies -- PT Hyun Indonesia Garmen, PT Bangju Kornesia
\nand PT Sarasa Nugraha -- dismissed since late July 796, 260 and
\n101,652 workers, respectively.<\/p>\n
KASBI's secretary Beno Widodo claimed the companies had owed
\nthe local workers more severance pay in accordance with
\ngovernment labor regulations -- two month's salary for workers
\nwho have worked between one and two years.<\/p>\n
They also demanded employers to stop turning labor disputes
\ninto criminal cases. Several union members have faced criminal
\ncharges for conducting demonstrations, they said.<\/p>\n
Four representatives were able to meet with embassy staff, but
\nit was not clear if anything was solved. -- Antara<\/p>",
