Workers rally against planned layoffs<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: Some 400 workers from wood processing company PT
\nTambun Kusuma staged a rally at the Tangerang legislative council
\non Tuesday amid fears that the management would lay them off.<\/p>\n
The protesters accused the company of looking for shortcomings
\non the part of its workers by claiming that 40 percent of them
\nheld fake school diplomas.<\/p>\n
\"It is part of a management trick to seek reasons to allow the
\ncompany to lay off workers, so that it can spend less on their
\nseverance pay,\" said Suharno, one of the protesters.<\/p>\n
He said the workers had learned of the management's plan to
\nrelocate the factory to Surabaya, East Java.<\/p>\n
In negotiations earlier, the company asked workers to tender
\ntheir resignations and offered each Rp 1.4 million in \"wisdom
\nmoney\".<\/p>\n
However, the workers refused as the amount was much less than
\nthe severance pay they would have received.<\/p>\n
Budi, another protester, said most of the workers had
\nbeen employed there for more than three years.<\/p>\n
According to the workers, the management had threatened to
\nreport to the police those proven to hold fake diplomas, unless
\nthey resigned voluntarily. --JP<\/p>",
