Workers raise their voice<\/p>\n
Worker strikes are on the rise again. One of the latest to be
\nhit was a garment factory. Thousands of workers brought their
\ncomplaints to the national legislature. They demanded an increase
\nin wages, the establishment of an All Indonesia Workers
\nAssociation (SPSI) unit at the factory and the signing of a
\ncollective work agreement.<\/p>\n
Generally speaking, not many industries are willing to have an
\nSPSI chapter present at their establishment and to maintain a
\ncollective work agreement with their workers. The reason is that
\nboth tend to strengthen the position of the workers in pushing
\ntheir demands. They fear that the presence of an SPSI chapter
\nmight unite the workers in articulating their aspirations and
\nexpressing them in an organized manner.<\/p>\n
If this is true, it must be regretted that SPSI is still being
\nregarded as a means for one-way communication: to convey the
\nworkers' wishes to the management. In reality SPSI could also
\nserve to explain the management's policies to the workers.<\/p>\n
A harmonious relationship between workers and management
\nshould become the target. It is difficult to conceive how the
\ndrive to attract investments can be successful as long as would-
\nbe foreign investors are working under the specter of labor
\ndisputes, especially when the information is obtained from
\nunreliable sources.<\/p>\n
